My friend passed me in the monastery

To revive the soft hearts of the doomed

Gardens that told of the gardens of Paradise and its people

    Angels in the shared assembly

Souls with my soul, the sanctity of those ruins

And how much did its leanings weigh of subtleties

By which we distinguish between asker and walker

So desire of appetites inclined our hearts

As a heart of ravenous inclined toward money

    No ascetic stood while holding

God’s hand except that the palm of the holder led him

Its corners have been fragrant with virtues

Like a meadow blown through by rubbing plants

And the fragrance of virtue blows from mention of its people

And its dwellers in every blessed association

Beds of ritual, furnished with virtues

And its pillows, perfect complete virtues

The word of God is delicious in the throat of the reverent

As the praise of the Virgin Mary was delicious in the world

For her praiser in her blessed praise

My lady, I stand at your door

And I am more deserving of your generosity so bless me
