1. تُب إنما الأعمار برقٌ خلَّبٌ

    وببرقها تذرُ الحياة رَذاذا

    Repent: lifetimes are nothing but deceptive lightning,

    and by its flash life is scattered into drizzle.

  2. واسعد بموتٍ صالحٍ في توبةٍ

    مرضيةٍ تكسو الخُطاةَ جُذاذا

    Seek blessedness in a righteous death, in repentance

    well-pleasing, clothing sinners in tatters.

  3. فابغِض خطيَّتَك التي من شأنها

    تدعُ الغنيْ بفضائلٍ شحّاذا

    So hate your sin, whose nature is

    to leave one rich in virtues a beggar.

  4. فاللَه يبغضها ولن يرضى بها

    ونراه عدلاً في القضا نفّاذا

    For God hates it and will never be pleased with it,

    and we see Him just, inexorable in judgment.

  5. فالْحَقْ به متشبِّهاً بكماله

    فاللَهُ يرضى العامل اللذلاذا

    So cleave to Him, seeking likeness to His perfection;

    for God is pleased with the diligent worker.

  6. وتجنب الآثام خيفةَ غيِّها

    والشهدُ أوَّلُه يريك لَذاذا

    Shun sins, fearing their seduction:

    honey at first shows you sweetness,

  7. فإذا تمكن منك عاد مُهوِّعاً

    كالإثم يجعل في النفوس هَذاذا

    but once it gains mastery over you, it turns repellent;

    like sin, it throws souls into agitation.

  8. فالنار والحشرات أسهلُ مخبراً

    من شر إثمٍ يستعيد جَباذا

    Fire and vermin are easier to endure

    than the evil a person reaps from committing sin.

  9. فارضَ الجحيمَ معذَّباً بلَظائها

    ويكونُ حالك في العذاب بِذاذا

    Then accept hell, tormented by its blaze,

    and let your state in torment be utter scattering.

  10. فافرِرْ ولا ترضَ الخطيئة مطلقاً

    إن الخطايا قد حُشينَ رِباذا

    Flee, then, and never accept sin,

    for sins have been packed full of snares.

  11. فالسيف من خدامها فإذا بدت

    أبصرتها موتاً بدا أخَّاذا

    The sword is among their servants; when they appear,

    you see them as death—manifest and grasping.

  12. فاسرِعْ إذاً يا غافلاً عن توبةٍ

    فعلام تُهملُ وقتها ولماذا

    So hasten, heedless one, to repentance:

    why neglect its appointed time—and why?

  13. حذراً عليك من النوازل إنها

    تذر النهى بحلولها أفلاذا

    Beware the calamities that may befall you:

    when they descend, they leave souls in fragments.

  14. إن كنت تطلب من طبيعتك التقى

    بمرادها فاطلبه من بغداذا

    If you seek piety from your own nature

    on the terms it desires, then seek it from Baghdad.

  15. فاشدد عليها إن تَرُم إرشادها

    فالنار يوهي عزمُها الفولاذا

    Bear down upon it if you wish to guide it,

    for the force of fire can weaken steel.

  16. واحسم بلذة حب ربك لذةً

    وقتيَّةً قد خِلتَ فيها لذاذا

    With the delight of loving your Lord, cut off a pleasure

    that was fleeting, though you imagined sweetness in it.

  17. هذا الذي جعل المدنس طاهراً

    لا ترج شيئاً مثل هذا لهذا

    This is what made the defiled one pure.

    Hope for nothing from that like what comes from this.

  18. لا توعدن اللَه منك بتوبةٍ

    وتني بها بل جدِّد الإحواذا

    Do not promise God that you will repent

    and then grow slack in it; instead renew your self-command.

  19. فكلوم جسمك لن تني بعلاجها

    والنفس أولى إن رأيت جُذاذا

    You never cease tending the wounds of your body,

    and the soul has greater claim, if you see it torn to pieces.

  20. فانهض وتب ما دام غصنُك ليناً

    فإذا ذوى كنتَ الدني الأنباذا

    Rise, then, and repent while your branch is still supple;

    once it withers, you will be lowly and cast away.

  21. والجأ لمريم ثم لذ بجنابها ال

    سامي تجدها ملجأً وملاذا

    Take refuge in Mary, then seek shelter in her exalted

    presence; you will find her a refuge and a haven.

  22. كم من عدوٍّ قد ثناه عزمها

    إذ مزَّقت أكبادَه أفلاذا

    How many an enemy her resolve has turned away

    when she tore his liver into pieces.

  23. كم مُثقَلٍ قد خفَّفت من ثقله

    عبئاً ثقيلاً كان أوهى الحاذا

    How many a burdened one she has relieved of his load,

    a heavy burden that had sapped his strength.

  24. مَلِكُ الورى إذ شاء مَلَّكها الورى

    فاستحوذت عن إذنه استحواذا

    The King of creation, when He willed, made her sovereign over creation;

    and by His permission she took full possession.
