1. عقلي يحدثه لسانٌ نائحُ

    إن كنت نواحاً فأنت الصالحُ

    My mind is addressed by a lamenting tongue

    If you are lamenting, then you are righteous

  2. ما لاح برق النوح إلّا أقبلت

    سحب المدامع للبروق تصافح

    The lightning of weeping did not appear except you came

    The clouds of tears greet the lightnings

  3. فكأنه وكأن دمعي طائرٌ

    من جفن عيني سائحٌ أو بارح

    It's as if it and my tear are a bird

    Roaming from the eyelid of my eye or resting

  4. فدموعه كالإعتماد وإنني

    متطهرٌ بعِماده متصالح

    So its tears are like reliance, and I

    Am purified by its ritual ablution, reconciled

  5. فالإتضاع موافقٌ نوحي كما

    ضحكي يباينه وذلك واضح

    So humility suits my weeping as

    My laughter contrasts it, and that's obvious

  6. فجهنمٌ للنوح أسنى عِلَّةٍ

    كالنار يسجرها زنادٌ قادح

    For weeping is the most despised cause of hell

    Like a fire lit by striking flint

  7. من صار ديدنه النواح فإنه

    بهواه في كل النواحي نائح

    Whoever's habit is to weep, he

    In all aspects laments according to his passion

  8. يا عندليب الفكر دونك أدمعي

    فاصدح لأنك نحو دمعي صاح

    Oh nightingale of thought, below you are my tears

    So chime, for towards my tear you call

  9. من يذكر الديان يذبح حزنه

    بحسام نوحٍ والترجي الذابحُ

    Whoever remembers the Judge, he slaughters his sorrow

    With a sword of weeping, and hope is the slaughterer

  10. من لم ينح باللَه ضل نواحه

    في اليأس إن اليأس شرٌّ فاضح

    Whoever did not weep for God, his weeping strayed

    In despair, for despair is manifest evil

  11. يا معجبُ اكفف عن نواحٍ خادعٍ

    أنَّى تنوح وزند شرك قادح

    Oh admirer, refrain from deceitful weeping

    How can you weep while the spark of idolatry strikes?

  12. لا نوح أصلاً حيث راحةُ بَشرَةٍ

    ذا سابحٌ يوماً وذلك رامح

    No weeping at all where there is the comfort of glad tidings

    Of one who swims one day, and that is a spear-thrower

  13. يا راهباً نح قد سمعت بأنه

    لا عيد للرهبان إنك رائح

    Oh monk, weep! For I have heard

    There is no feast for monks, you are departing

  14. ومتى نزحت عن الخطايا فانتزح

    عن نوحك المشجيْ وفز يا نازح

    And when you move away from sins, then move

    Away from your agonizing weeping and flee, oh fleer!

  15. ثق إنما الزفرات خير مدامعٍ

    عند اعتياض الدمع إنك رائح

    Trust that sighs are better than good tears

    When one is accustomed to tears, you are departing

  16. إن تبك شبعاناً فتلك ضلالةٌ

    بل دمعة الصوّام غيثٌ صالح

    If you cry satiated, that is misguidance

    Rather, the faster's tear is beneficial rain

  17. قد قال يوحنا السعيد السُّلَّمي

    قولاً يؤيده الصلاح الواضح

    John the Fortunate of Suleimi has said

    A saying supported by clear righteousness

  18. لا يطلب الديان منا آيةً

    بل يطلب النوح الذي أنا مادح

    The Judge does not ask us for a sign

    Rather He asks for the weeping that I am praising
