1. نفسٌ غدت قد عصاك أَسهلُها

    آخرها ظالمٌ وأوَّلُها

    A soul that has become disobedient,

    The easiest of it is the end, and the beginning is oppressive,

  2. رأيتها لا تزال قاتلةً

    مقتولةً والنفاقُ يقتلُها

    I saw it constantly killing,

    Killed, and hypocrisy kills it,

  3. أبيت منها أمام ناب الردى

    وظُفرِه والهلاك يَشمُلُها

    I refused in front of the fang of ruin,

    And its claws, and destruction encompasses it,

  4. أنام واللادغاتِ في مرقدي

    ومفرشي والوساد قَنْقَلُها

    I sleep while the stingers are in my bed,

    My mattress and pillows twitching,

  5. كم محنةٍ قد غدوت في طيها

    من غيها والإله يَرذُلُها

    How much distress has it become in its folds,

    Lost in its confusion, and God abandons it,

  6. إقبالها يُقصيه رامحُها

    إدربارُها يدنيه أعزلُها

    Its rise pushes away its spear,

    Its fall brings its unarmed near,

  7. قد حِرتُ فيما بين تهذيبها

    لأنها والصلاح يجهلُها

    I was confused between disciplining it,

    Because it is ignorant of righteousness,

  8. تضيق عند الخلاص ذرعاً كما

    يفيض عند الشرور منهلُها

    It tightens when salvation is near, just as

    Its spring of mischief overflows,

  9. نازعتها الخير وهي يَجذبني

    إلى حضيض البوارِ كاهلُها

    I contended with it for good but it pulls me

    To the abyss of disgrace, its shoulders,

  10. إن قلت لا جوابتك عاصيةً

    أحببت ما قد يعاف فاعلُها

    If I say, no, you are disobedient,

    It loved what its doer would disavow,

  11. أذمُّ موردَها وأنهله

    ها قد أحارَ العقولَ جدولُها

    I blame its pursuit and drink from it,

    Its water is Euphrates which I see,

  12. فماؤها ألفراتُ أُبصرُهُ

    أُجاجَها والزلالُ أَشكلُها

    Its turbidity, and the clear is perplexing,

    The water of virtue diminishes from it, just as

  13. يَغيضُ ماءُ الصلاح منها كما

    يُفيضُ ماءَ الطلاح مِقولُها

    The water of mischief overflows from its spring,

    I elevate it yet poison is in its water,

  14. أَعُلُّها والسمومُ في مائها

    وا عجباً والسمومُ مَنهلُها

    How strange! And poisons are its spring,

    I complain of the soul's woes then thank it,

  15. أشكو بَلا النفسِ ثم أشكرُه

    أهجو حكيماً أتاك يسألُها

    I blame a wise one who came to ask about it,

    So strange is one who doubts then thanks it,

  16. فاعجب لشاكٍ أتاك يشكرها

    وعالمٍ قد أضلَّ جاهلُها

    And a scholar whom its ignorance misguided,

    It left me confused in thoughts,

  17. قد غادرتني أَحيرُ في فِكَرٍ

    أتعبني في الأمور أسهلُها

    It tires me in the easiest matters,

    I solve its problems but it perplexes me,

  18. أَحُلُ مشكلَها فيُعضِلُني

    خلافُه والخلاف أَعضَلُها

    Its contradictions and disputes cripple it,

    If you come to it while truth is clear,

  19. إن جئتَها والصواب ظاهره

    بطيِّها قد لقيك أَشكلُها

    Its obstinacy has faced you with perplexity,

    If I raged while the reins were with me,

  20. إن جمحت والعنانُ كان معي

    باِنجيل ربي أتيت أَشكُلُها

    With my Lord's Gospel I came, it perplexed me,

    Woe to it since its best

  21. تبّاً لها مذ صار أحسنُها

    أقبحَها والخسيسَ أفضلُها

    Became its ugliest, and the lowliest its superior,

    Verily matters became inverted mistakenly,

  22. إن القضايا تعاكست خطأً

    نقيضها للعيان يَبذلُها

    Its opposite to the eye it manifests,

    What I loathed it loves,

  23. إن الذي قد هويتُ تَكرهه

    إن الذي قد شَنئتُ يَقبلُها

    What I hated it accepts,

    I accept it doing what I do not see,

  24. أرضى بها ما لا أرى فعلَه

    يوصلها ما كان يَفصلُها

    What used to seperate it now joins it,

    It distresses whoever praises it,

  25. قد شانها من تراه يمدحها

    وزانها من تراه يَعذِلُها

    And elevates whoever blames it,

    Do not weary of one who came to support it

  26. لا يتعبن من أتاك ينصرها

    بمدحه فالنقيض يَخذلُها

    With his praise, for the opposite disappoints it,

    If one said, perfection is its elegance,

  27. إن قال إن الكمال رونقُها

    أجبته والنفاق يُبطلُها

    I replied, hypocrisy nullifies it,

    Or one said, death is its ride,

  28. أو قال إن الممات مركبها

    أجبته والهلاك حاملُها

    I replied, perdition carries it,

    Or one said, loyalty governs it,

  29. أو قال إن الوفاء حاكمها

    أجبته لا يزال يُهملُها

    I replied, it constantly neglects it,

    Or one said, blindness is in its hand,

  30. أو قال إن العماء في يدها

    أجبته والضلال أُنمُلُها

    I replied, misguidance makes it stumble,

    Or one said, bliss is its ascent,

  31. أو قال إن النيعم أرفعها

    أجبته والجحيم أسفلُها

    I replied, hellfire is its descent,

    Or one said, prosperity urges it forth,

  32. أو قال إن الرفاه مركَضها

    أجبته والهوان أَرجُلُها

    I replied, disgrace halts it,

    Or one said, hope is its pillar,

  33. أو قال إن الرجاء عُمدتها

    أجبته لا يزال يُمهلُها

    I replied, it constantly delays it,

    Or one said, affection is its trait,

  34. أو قال إن الوداد شيمتها

    أجبته للشرور ينقلُها

    I replied, it transfers it to evil,

    Or one said, discord is its allurer,

  35. أو قال إن النزاع فاتنها

    أجبته لا يزال يُذهلُها

    I replied, it constantly bewilders it,

    The soul is a demon with its own essence,

  36. فالنفس شيطانٌ لها ذاتها

    تغتالها والعناد يَقتلُها

    That backstabs it, and obstinacy kills it,

    Trust what I have mentioned to you,

  37. ثق بالذي قد ذكرت ذا لكم

    والقول موجبه يعللها

    Its implication necessitates this,

    Nothing pleased me but one who fears God,

  38. ما راضَ تي النفس غير ذي رَهَبٍ

    يبيت قبل الصباح يَعذلُها

    Who berates it before dawn,

    Brandishing patience, striking it,

  39. يَشهَرُ ذا الهُجود يَضربها

    فيهدمُ الأعدا ويَخذلُها

    Destroying enemies and disappointing it,

    Extending atop the sea of his thoughts,

  40. يمدُّ من فوق بحرِ فكرته

    أشراكَه اللاتي سيُوغلُها

    The traps that will completely engulf it,

    Hopefully he can catch its ideas,

  41. عساه أن يصطاد أفكارَه ال

    حسنى وأقبحهنَّ يَرذلُها

    The good and the ugly he rejects,

    Saying with humility when wishes arrive,

  42. يقول بالاتضاع إذ وردت

    رسائلُ الآمال يُرسلُها

    It has no cure if it leads, only shoulders submit,

    So reform, O God, its corruption,

  43. ليس لها للشفاء ذا حَكَمٌ

    إن سادها دانت كواهلُها

    Pleasing the last as it pleased the first,

    And forgive it what wrong it committed,

  44. فاَصلِح إذاً يا إلهُ مُفسدَها

    من آخرٍ يرضاه أولُها

    Increasing its distance so it reasons,

    You who came to save it,

  45. وافتح لها باب الكمال الجلي

    عليك يا ذا الجلال أَتكِلُها

    From the abyss of ruin and transfer it,

    To a bliss whose arrival,

  46. واغفر لها ما أساء مفتَعَلاً

    يزيده بعداً فَيَعقلُها

    Beautifies it, and beauty makes it beautiful,

    Until when it comes to You submitting,

  47. أنت الذي قد أتيتَ تنقذها

    من الحِمام الردى وتَنقلُها

    Indebted, and the judgement questions it,

    It will say, "My Lord, have mercy and delight me,

  48. إلى نعيمٍ يزين موردُه

    جمالَها والجمال مُجمِلُها

    With my repentance," and hope accepts it.

  49. حتى إذا ما أتتك خاضعةً

    مَدينةً والحسابُ يسألُها

  50. تقول رب ارحمَنْ وإبتهجَن

    بتوبتي فالرجاء يَقبلُها
