1. الذكرُ يُحدِثُ أشباحاً مخيِّلةً

    للعقل والعقل لا ينفك معقولا

    Remembrance conjures fanciful phantasms

    For the mind, and the mind cannot help but

  2. عنه التصور موضوعاً ومرتفعاً

    عن غاية الذكر معقوداً ومحلولا

    Conceive of it as object and rejection

    Of the purpose of remembrance, constricted and unbound.

  3. والفكر في طبقات الفهم منسرحٌ

    يزيد في آلة التخييل تخييلا

    And thought roams the layers of understanding,

    Increasing the imagination's imagining,

  4. حتَّى إذا الفهم حقَّقْ ما تصوَّره

    في منظر العقل مفصولا وموصولا

    Until when understanding realizes what it imagined

    In the aspect of the mind, divided and conjoined.

  5. حَنَى إليه الهوى حتى تريدَ به

    مفهوم ما كان فيه العقل مشغولا

    Then desire inclines toward it, wanting

    To grasp what the mind was engaged with.

  6. فالذكر كالشم موضوعاً ومحمولا

    عن حسه العام مجلوّاً ومصقولا

    So remembrance is like scent set out and conveyed

    Beyond its general sense, dissolved and refined.

  7. ثم التصور معروضاً لعارضه

    كالعين تنظر فيه العرض والطولا

    Then conception displayed to its occurrence

    Like the eye looking on extension and limit.

  8. والفكر كالذوق أو كالنطق مشتَرَكاً

    يدنو ويدبر مردوداً ومقبولا

    And thought is like taste or speech, sharing

    In approach and withdrawal, refused and accepted.

  9. والفهم كالسمع يَقنعْ من تَعقُّلِهِ

    في مَعرض العلم تحريماً وتحليلا

    And understanding is like hearing, content in its reasoning

    In the context of knowledge, prohibited and analyzed.

  10. فيه الإرادة تمضي نحو شهوتها

    كاللمس يُبقي دليلَ الحس مدلولا

    In it will progresses toward its passion

    Like touch, keeping the proof of sense denoted.

  11. هذي قِوَى الروح في الإنسان إن حصلت

    في العقل صيَّرتِ المجهول معقولا

    These are the spirit's powers in man; if they collect

    In reason, they make the unknown known.

  12. فاحمل على حربها يا راهباً أبداً

    إن لم تكن قاتلاً أصبحت مقتولا

    So take up arms against them forever, O monk,

    If you cannot be a killer, you will become the killed.
