سهرٌ صالحٌ ينير العقولا

بليالٍ تَزيد نوماً ثقيلا

A good late night vigil illuminates minds

In nights that bring deep sleep

طهِّرِ العقل بالسهاد فتدري

فضلَ ما قد أَخذتَ فيه سبيلا

Purify your mind with wakefulness, and you will know

The merit of the path you have taken

من رأى فكره عليلاً بفُحشٍ

فبذاك الدواء يشفي العليلا

Whoever sees their thoughts as foully ill

Will heal the sick with that cure

بليالٍ تَصُورُ فيهنَّ فكراً

بسهادٍ يَصُورُ داءً دخيلا

In nights where thoughts are pictured

Wakefulness pictures an alien disease

يا حليفَ السهاد إن كنت برقاً

لا يراك الرقادُ إلّا قليلا

O ally of wakefulness, if you are lightning

The sleepers see you only a little

سهرٌ دائمٌ وقلبٌ رقيقٌ

كاد لولا غشاؤه أن يسيلا

Constant vigil and a gentle heart

Nearly overflowed were it not for its veil

وفؤادٌ يذوبُ بين ضلوعٍ

وحنينٌ يشتاق تلك الطلولا

A heart melting between ribs

And a yearning longing for those hills

وسحابُ الجفون تَسكُبُ دمعاً

من عيونٍ كأنَّ فيها سيولا

The clouds of eyelids pour tears

From eyes in which it's as if there are floods

ومحبٌّ يُساق للبين قهراً

فتراه لذاك عبداً ذليلا

And a lover forcibly led to separation

You see him thus a humble slave

يا رعى اللَه عهدَ لبنان عني

وسقاه العِهادَ عَرضاً وطولا

O God, make me forget the covenant of Lebanon

And quenched my wakefulness with breadth and length

كم رسولٍ بعثتُه بسلامٍ

فجفاني وكان قلبي الرسولا

How many messengers have I sent with peace

Yet their hearts spurned me though mine was the messenger

وبِوادٍ به النواقيسُ تتلو

نغماً طيباً وحمداً طويلا

With a valley where bells recite

A beautiful melody and prolonged praise

وبِديرٍ يزين رهبانَ نُسكٍ

بصلاةٍ تُزيِّنُ الإنجيلا

And a monastery adorning monks of devotion

With prayer that adorns the Gospel

وبشادٍ يُشيدُ صوتاً رخيماً

سَبِّحوا سَبِّحوا إلهاً جليلا

And a place where a melodious voice chants

Glorify, glorify the Majestic God

نغماتٍ يقال أبرَت عليلاً

وصلاةٌ يقال أحيت قتيلا

Melodies that they say cured a sick man

And a prayer that they say revived a slain man

ما رأت مقلتي كهذا جمالاً

ولذا ما رأت كذاك جميلا

My eyes have never seen such beauty

And thus never seen such loveliness
