1. بيني وبين المبدعين مرامي

    وَصَلت حبالَ خصامهم بخصامي

    Between me and the innovators there are darting glances

    The ropes of their quarrel tied to my quarrel

  2. نكثوا ذمامَ اللَه حتى غودروا

    في الشرق أوباشاً بغير ذمام

    They violated God's covenant until they were betrayed

    In the East, they became ruffians without reins

  3. تركوا إمام الحق بطرسَ واقتدوا

    بدسائسِ الآراءِ في الأوهام

    They abandoned the Imam of truth and followed

    The wiles of opinions lost in delusions

  4. عن آريوس نسطور عن برصوم عن

    سَركيسَ عن فوتيُوس عن بالام

    About Arius, Nestorius, Barsuma,

    Sergius, Photius and Palamas

  5. من علمهم رضعوا السُّمومَ وريحِهم

    نشقوا السَّمومَ فما لهم من سام

    Those whose knowledge they suckled, they lapped up poison and their stench

    They split venom so they had no protector

  6. ونسوا بأن اللَه مزق شملهم

    وأقام غرباً يَافِثاً عن سام

    And forgot that God tore them asunder

    And established in the West, wandering without a supporter

  7. وعدا على الشرق الدمارُ فلم يزل

    هدفاً لكلِّ مثقَّفٍ وحسام

    And destruction befell the East ceaselessly

    A target for every enlightened and sharp sword

  8. فغدوا بلا ملكٍ ولا علمٍ ولا

    شانٍ وكانوا شامةً في الشام

    They became without a king, knowledge, repute

    And were a blemish upon Syria

  9. ضلوا عن الإيمان لما سلَّموا

    للهرطقات مواقع الأحكام

    They went astray from faith when they surrendered

    The seats of power to the heresies

  10. حتى استقاد المبدعون خيارَهم

    قودَ البعير بمقودٍ وزمام

    Until the innovators regained their best

    The camel led by halter and bridle

  11. وتفرقوا عن ساحةٍ كانت بهم

    تزهو كزهو الروض بابن غمام

    And they parted from an arena that boasted them

    Like the blossoming of a garden with spring rain

  12. ورموا بإقليد الكنيسة فانثنوا

    يستأنسون مخاوفَ الآجام

    And they tossed away the Church's signet ring and recoiled

    Seeking comfort from the fears of passing days

  13. مذ ضعضعت أيمانُهم إيمانَهم

    نَبَذوا فكانت ضربةً في الهام

    Since their faith was shaken, they discarded it

    And it was a blow to the temples

  14. ما زال إسرائيلُ يجحد ربه

    حتى غدا غرضاً لوقع سهام

    Israel still denies its Lord

    Until it became prey to arrows

  15. لو كان يفهم ما مضى لقد ارتضى

    فيما قضى مولاه في الأفهام

    Had it understood the past, it would have accepted

    What its Master decreed in understandings

  16. بل ساء ظنّاً شامخاً متكبِّراً

    متعجرفاً متصلف الأرحام

    But it thought ill, arrogant, obstinate

    Haughty, pretentious, with twisted wombs

  17. يهجو رواةَ الحق فيما قد رووا

    عن بِيعةٍ عن حِبرها المقدام

    It vilifies the bearers of truth for what they narrated

    About the pledge, about its intrepid scribe

  18. أنَّى تعيِّرنا وأنت معيَّرٌ

    يا راقصاً في ظُلمة الأحلام

    How dare you criticize us while you are criticized

    O dancer in the darkness of dreams

  19. هل سرَّنا إفسادُنا إيمانَنا

    أم هل ختمناه بسوء خِتام

    Did our corruption harm our faith

    Or did we seal it with a bad ending?

  20. أم هل ورثنا المكسَ عن سيمونَ في

    بَيعِ الذي نُعطاه بالإنعام

    Or did we inherit deceit from Simon's

    Sale, whom we rewarded with grace?

  21. أم هل تعاطينا دسائس مبدعٍ

    فتركننا صرعى بغير مدام

    Or did we adopt the wiles of an innovator

    Leaving us struck down without support?

  22. أم هل عثرنا لو يقالُ لنا لعا

    بل قيل لكنَّ العمِيْ متعامِ

    Or did we stumble, if it is said to us: the blind

    Are excused, but you are obstinate?

  23. أم هل نكثنا مرةً في مرةٍ

    عهدَ الكنيسة بعد عقد ذمام

    Or did we break a pact time and again

    The Church's covenant after tying its reins?

  24. أم هل نرى تلك الخرافات التي

    هي ضُحكةٌ في خاصِها والعام

    Or do we believe those myths that are

    Laughable to elite and commoner alike?

  25. أم هل تَجاهَلْنا بحقٍّ واضحٍ

    بتعنُّتٍ وتجبُّرٍ وتسام

    Or did we ignore an obvious right

    Out of obstinacy, tyranny, and arrogance?

  26. أم هل عصينا بُطرساً لخلافةٍ

    قد أُثبتت بشواهد العلام

    Or did we disobey Peter's successorship

    Proven by the signs of prelates?

  27. أم هل تبعنا رأي كل مفنَّدٍ

    مستمسكين بوصمة الأوهام

    Or did we follow the opinion of every discredited one

    Clinging to the stigma of delusions?

  28. أم هل جحدنا الحق وهو مؤيدٌ

    بأدلة الآبا ذوي الإكرام

    Or did we deny the truth while it is supported

    By proofs from the honored fathers?

  29. أم هل تبطَّنا الضلالةَ والدَّها

    متظاهرين بمَسحة الإلمام

    Or did we secretly adopt heresy and deceit

    Feigning the mark of high office?

  30. أم هل سُبينا عوائد جهلنا

    ما بين سامٍ في الأنام وحام

    Or did we parade the ignorance of our customs

    Among Shem, Ham, and Japheth in all people?

  31. أم هل تأوَّلنا معاني كُتْبنا

    عن وضعها كتأوُّل المتعامي

    Or did we interpret our scriptures

    Against their composition, like other interpreters?

  32. أم هل دهتنا الكبريا فتنكست

    أعلامنا عن شامخ الأعلام

    Or did arrogance cast us down until our banners fell

    From the lofty pinnacle of banners?

  33. أم هل أضعنا طاعةً أبويةً

    لما أطعنا خدعة الأوهام

    Or did we neglect filial obedience

    When we obeyed the trickery of illusions?

  34. أم هل عضدنا المدعين فأقحموا

    في غيهم بسفاهة الإقحام

    Or did we support the claimants until they plunged

    Into their confusion with the rashness of plunging?

  35. أم هل هجونا بِيعة اللَه التي

    نَشَرت أشعَّةَ رُسْلها في العام

    Or did we vilify God's pledge which

    Spread the rays of its apostles among people?

  36. فبأيها تتفاخرون وأنتمُ

    قومٌ عَققتم فاخرجوا بسلام

    By which of these do you boast, while you are

    A people whose faith is fragmented - so depart in peace!

  37. فالفخر ليس برُتبةٍ أو زنيةٍ

    بِيعيةٍ منظومةِ الإحكام

    For boasting is not with office or privilege

    Or ordination or rhymed compilation

  38. بل باتحاد المؤمنين بطاعة ال

    حِبر العظيم الضابط الأحكام

    But with the unity of believers in obedience to the

    Great pope, arbiter of doctrines

  39. لا تفخروا بأصولكم وفروعُكم

    معتلَّةُ الإيمان بالبِرسام

    Do not boast of your roots and branches

    With faith marred by the burin

  40. فالغصن إن يثبت بجوهر أصله

    نامٍ وإن يُفصَل فليس بنام

    For if a branch is rooted in its origin's essence

    It flourishes, but if detached, it withers

  41. والآن ديدنُكم ونتم أهله

    أن تفخروا بالنقض والإبرام

    And now your creed, while you are its people

    Is to boast of refutation and confirmation

  42. إن تنكروا ما قلته فاستطلعوا

    أخبارَكم في سالف الأيام

    If you deny what I have said, then explore

    Your history in bygone times

  43. لتروا بذلك ما نراه فيكمُ

    إن صح حكم الحق بالإلزام

    So you may see what we see in you

    If the judgment of truth binds by necessity

  44. كلا فإن البوم تُظلِمُ عينُه

    في النور ثم تضيء في الإظلام

    No, the owl's eye darkens in daylight

    Then illuminates in darkness

  45. هل يستجيب اللَه دعوةَ قانتٍ

    متعبدٍ في هيكل الأصنام

    Would God answer the prayer of a devout worshipper

    In a temple of idols?

  46. قِه ترقَ صُن زد هشَّ بشَّ بحكمةٍ

    تَسمُ اتضع لِهْ تِهْ وسِمْ يا سامي

    Take heed and rise high with wisdom

    Be humble to Him, repent and fast, O eminent one

  47. وإذا النفوس رأت نقائصَ ذاتها

    جَدَّت على نُقصانها بتمام

    And when souls see deficiencies in themselves

    They strive to remedy their shortcomings

  48. لا تثلبُنَّ سواكمُ في دائكم

    فالنَتنُ ينشا من فساد طعام

    Do not blame only yourselves for your affliction

    Decay arises from the rot of food

  49. لولاه لم يُعرَف ثناءُ كرائمٍ

    صينت ولم يُنظَم هِجاءُ لِئام

    Without it, the praise of honorable deeds would not be known

    Nor would the lampooning of villains be composed

  50. يكفي التكرمُ والتفضل والتقى

    قوماً أتوا إيمانهم بإمام

    Benevolence, grace, piety suffice

    A people whose faith was given a leader

  51. فلأرثينَّكمُ بكل قصيدةٍ

    ولأندبنَّكم بكل نظام

    So I will elegize you in every ode

    And mourn you in every composition

  52. ولأنعينَّكمُ لكل مصيبةٍ

    ولأبكينَّكمُ بدمعٍ هام

    And eulogize you for every misfortune

    And weep for you with copious tears

  53. نوحوا لما عدَّدتُه وعدَدته

    ما أطرب الأوتارَ بالأنغام

    I have enumerated these and counted them

    Not to melodize strings with tunes

  54. نبهتكم فيها بفيها فارعووا

    إن الدواء يكون في الأسقام

    But to awaken you - so beware!

    The cure can be in maladies

  55. لا تخلص الأرواح من آثامها

    إلّا إذا ما كنَّ في الأجسام

    Spirits are not cleansed of their sins

    Unless their bodies are enshrouded

  56. فتمسكوا بعرى الكنيسة أمِّكم

    تنجوا بها من وصمة الآثام

    So hold fast to your mother Church's ties

    To be saved from the stain of sins

  57. ثم اجلسوا في باب بطرس راسِكم

    لا خير في جسمٍ خلا عن هام

    Then sit at the gate with your head bowed to Peter

    No good is in a body devoid of shoulders

  58. يا فرحةَ الراعي بِرَدِّ خَروفِه

    من بعد ما قد ضلَّ في الآجام

    O joy of the shepherd when his lost sheep returns

    After wandering confused in the thickets

  59. إني وإياكم كإخوة يوسفٍ

    هلّا نهاكم شانُ اَبي أفرام

    You and I are like Joseph's brothers

    Would that you be deterred by our forebear Aphram's status

  60. يا حالةً ما كان أغناني بها

    عن نظم قافيةٍ وسجع كلام

    O if only it would spare me what has preoccupied me

    From versifying rhymes and speaking words

  61. لكنَّ بغيَ الوغد مُديةُ حتفِه

    يستجذبُ المرمى لسهم الرامي

    But the rogue's insistence is his death sentence

    It draws the arrow to the archer's target

  62. هذي تفاصيلٌ قد استخدمتُها

    لكمُ فجاءت أحسن استخدام

    These are details I have employed

    For you, and excellent their employment

  63. خذها محجَّبةً إذا ما أسفرت

    عن خُبرها أنْسَت بني إبرام

    Take them veiled, for when they bare

    Their news, the Children of Abraham are content

  64. فإذا ذكرتَ مديح مريم بعدما

    نادتك صف لي عزتي ومقامي

    So when Mary invites you, after you have called upon her:

    Attribute to me my power and position

  65. أنتِ سماء اللَه أنتِ عرشه

    أنت علامة قَدره المتسامي

    You are God's heaven, His throne

    You are the sign of His lofty decree

  66. يا آية اللَه الذي أنتِ له

    في العالمين نتيجةُ الأحكام

    O God's sign, for whom you are

    In all worlds, the result of doctrines

  67. أنت أمُّه وعروسُه وله ابنةٌ

    من ذا رأى بكراً لها ابنُ فطام

    You are His mother, bride, and daughter

    Who has seen a virgin who has a weaned son?

  68. هذي صفاتٌ لم يحزها سيدٌ

    مَلِكٌ ولا مَلَكُ السماء السامي

    These are attributes no master has reached

    King or angel of highest heaven

  69. إلاك يا من جئتُها مستشفعاً

    ولقد قطعت سباسباً وموامي

    Except you, whom I came to intercede

    And certainly traversed plains and dunes

  70. جودي رثي غِيثي ورقّي وارحمي

    قد زاد فيك تشوقي وهيامي

    Be generous, send down my rain, have mercy,

    My longing and passion for you has increased

  71. وتأرُّقي وتحرُّقي وتنسُّكي

    وتمسُّكي وتضوُّري وأُوامي

    Be compassionate, burn, practice asceticism

    Hold fast, repent, be devoted, protect me

  72. هذا سلامي لا يفي إن لم يصل

    جبريلُ نظمَ سلامه بسلامي

    This is my peace - it will not suffice unless

    Gabriel joins his poem's peace to my peace
