1. قلبٌ يوسوس في الصدور ويخنسُ

    مكراً ونفسٌ للسرائر تَحبسُ

    A heart whispers deceitfully in the breasts and conceals

    Evil and a soul that imprisons secrets

  2. وطبيعةٌ طبعت على كدرٍ فما

    لصلاحها إلّا زمانٌ مُتعِس

    And a nature imprinted with bitterness so

    Nothing makes it virtuous but wretched times

  3. فكأنها في الربح أشعبُ عصرها

    والدهر عما قد يفيها أَقْعس

    It seems as if in profit it presses out its juice

    While fate regarding what may please it, is parched

  4. تزداد همّاً كلما ازدادت غنىً

    كالبدر يخسف في الكمال ويَعبس

    It grows more worried the more it gains wealth

    Like the full moon it wanes at its peak and frowns

  5. ماجاءها مستمطرٌ إلّا وقد

    أسقته من مكرٍ كغيثٍ يَسلَس

    Whatever rain came to it, it gave him

    From its deceit like a gentle rain that flows

  6. إن الذي يبغي موارد صفوها

    جهلاً فعند صدورها يتوسوس

    Indeed, whoever seeks the pure yields of its rivers

    Is ignorant so in its breasts it whispers

  7. يرجو الأماني أن تفيه بوعدها

    بينا نرى يرجو وفاها ييأس

    He hopes it will fulfill its promises

    While we see he hopes for its loyalty in vain

  8. كالزهر يبدو للعيون مورَّداً

    بيننا تراه يميس غضّاً ييبس

    Like a flower it appears blooming to the eyes

    While we see it touched by decay, dried up

  9. فالغدرُ شيمتُها ولو صدقت أبت

    والصدق منها بالخلاف ملَبَّس

    So betrayal is its trait even if it were true it would refuse

    And truth from it is clothed in contradiction

  10. تشكو العنا ضعفاً ولكن كذبها

    أدرى فهل لي من فتىً يتفرَّس

    It complains of weakness to avoid blame but

    I know better, is there a man who can examine?

  11. فكأنها لمقاصدي وكأنني

    شاءٌ يمزقهنَّ ذئبٌ أطلس

    It's as if it's for my own purposes, and it's as if

    I'm a sheep torn apart by a hidden wolf

  12. فاحذر أُخَيَّ ولا تثق بصفيرها

    ما بين أشجار الأماني يَخنُس

    So beware, my brother, and do not trust its singing

    Among the trees of wishes it hides

  13. فاجعل مواعيد الطبيعة بيننا

    منسيةً دُرِست وأخرى تدرس

    Make the promises of nature between us

    Forgotten, studied and studied again

  14. فكأنها في وعدها وبخُلقها

    أقوال عرقوبٍ تلين وتَيبَس

    It's as if in its promise and stinginess

    It's the words of a flute, softening and drying

  15. فاحذر طبيعتك التي في عينها

    عمشٌ يكدِّرها تُفيقُ وتَنعس

    So beware your nature in whose eyes

    Is a defect that troubles it, awakens and sleeps

  16. وتريك نقصَ الكاملين بمقلةٍ

    وراء تحسدها الجواري الكُنَّس

    And it shows you the flaws of the perfect

    Through blinkers, while the cleaning maids envy it

  17. فالحكمة الغراء تجهل حدها

    منها وآرسطو لديها أخرس

    Even the greatest wisdom does not know its limit

    Aristotle with it was mute

  18. كم من حكيمٍ جاء مأسوراً بها

    قسراً ولا يدري لماذا يَدرس

    How many a wise man came bound to it

    By force, not knowing why he studies

  19. عميت بصيرتُه بعلمٍ مُعجَب

    عن علمها الشرعيْ فكيف يُهندس

    Its divine knowledge blinded

    His insight from his admired knowledge, so how can he build?

  20. فمحبة الذات استغشَّته متى

    عنها تجرد عاد عنها يوكَس

    Self-love deceived him, if

    From it he detached, he would return humbled

  21. يا راهباً ترك الطبيعة خلفه

    متنكباً عنها وعنها أقعَس

    O you monk who left nature behind

    Turning away from it and refusing it

  22. لم لا تكذِّبُها متى ما حدثت

    بالسوء إن السوء فيها يَهجِس

    Why do you not call it a liar when it speaks

    Evil? Evil in it awakens

  23. فعلام تجهلها وإنك راهبٌ

    وعلام تسمعها وأنت مُقَلنَس

    Why do you ignore it when you are a monk

    And why do you listen to it when you are devout?

  24. أعطيت في علم الطبيعة خبرةً

    لم تعطها الحُكَما وأنت تُدلِّس

    You were given expertise in the knowledge of nature

    That you did not give the wise, yet you cheat

  25. كم راهبٍ ضحكت عليه عندما

    آلامُها فيه عليه تؤسَّس

    How many monks it laughed at when

    Its pains in them were built upon them

  26. ينقاد معْها طائعاً لعِنانها

    مهما تقلْه قال هذا الأنفَس

    He obeys it willingly holding its reins

    However evil it takes him, he says this is best

  27. يعصي الإله ونذرَه ورئيسه

    ويطيعها فهيَ الرئيس الأرأس

    He disobeys God, his vows and his superior

    And obeys it, for it is the greatest chief

  28. لو كان يبغض ذاته ويذمها

    ما كان أصبح كافراً يتوسوس

    If he hated himself and condemned it

    He would not have become an infidel full of doubts

  29. للَه درك راهباً ومجاهداً

    يقظاً حكيماً لا ينام وينعس

    God's gift is a monk and spiritual warrior

    Awake, wise, never sleeping nor napping

  30. ملك الطبيعة فهي قيد مراده

    مأمورةٌ منه فلا يَتَسَجَّس

    He ruled nature so it is under his will

    Commanded by him, never transgressing

  31. إن شاء يلزمها إماتتَها تَمُت

    أو شاء يحبسها بذلٍّ تُحبَس

    If he wishes, he obligates its death, it dies

    Or if he wished, he imprisons it in humbleness

  32. فجهادُها وسلوكها متوقِّفٌ

    منها على عقلٍ رصينٍ يَحرُس

    So its struggle and path are dependent

    On a firm mind that guards it

  33. فاللَه قد قسم الحظوظَ لخلقه

    فاسمع مُصيخاً ما تلاه بولُس

    For God has apportioned lots to His creation

    So listen to me recite what Paulus declared

  34. يُوداسُ مات بذنبه وخَطائه

    وحَظي بتوبته أخوه بُطرس

    Judas died for his sins and mistakes

    While thanks to his repentance, his brother Peter gained good fortune

  35. إن شئت فاسأل طاعةً تسمع إذاً

    ماذا يجيبك يوسفٌ أو يونس

    If you wish, ask for obedience and you will hear

    What Joseph or Jonas will answer you

  36. إن العوالي للمعالي معقلٌ

    بفضائلٍ خضعت لديها الأرؤس

    Indeed lofty matters belong to the virtuous

    With virtues that humbled heads submitted to

  37. فصلاحها وطلاحها كصوارمٍ

    بيضٍ تسيل على ظُباها الأنفس

    For its righteousness and redemption are like

    White swords pouring over their blades

  38. أنفاسها مسكيةٌ وحواسها

    نَسكيَّةٌ منها الأعادي تُخفَس

    Its breaths are musky and its senses

    Ascetic, through them enemies are subdued

  39. كذب الذي قد قال وهو المفتري

    السيف أصدق من كتابٍ يُدرَس

    A liar has said, he who slanders,

    The sword is more honest than a studied book

  40. فالسيف معناه الطبيعةُ نفسُها

    أما الكتاب فشرع ربٍّ يَرؤس

    The sword means nature itself

    As for the book, it is the law of a watchful Lord

  41. إن الطبيعة علَّةٌ لحياتنا

    والموت فيها حاكمٌ مترئِّس

    Nature is the cause of our lives

    And death in it is an enthroned ruler

  42. كالجسم ينمي بالحرارة قوةً

    وبما ترى أنفاسه تتنفس

    As the body grows strong with warmth

    And with what you see its breaths breathe

  43. وبها يعود إلى التلاشي ميتاً

    كالنار من بعد اشتعال تُرمَس

    And through it, it returns to decay, dead,

    Like fire after burning out

  44. لا تركننَّ إلى طبيعتك التي

    من شأنها تبدو بأُنسٍ يؤنِس

    Do not incline towards your nature which

    Appears gently comforting

  45. يا ليتها كانت ترى آلامَها

    هيهات إن الحس منها مُفلس

    If only it could see its pains

    Alas, senses in it are bankrupt

  46. تتسربل الكذب الفظيع كأنه

    ثوبٌ يسهِّمه طِرازٌ سندس

    It dresses the monstrous lie as if it were

    A garment embroidered with fine silk

  47. حتى إذا رأستك بثت سمها

    والسم يعقبه هلاكٌ مُتعس

    Until when it poisons your head it seeps its poison

    And after poison comes wretched demise

  48. فاحذر رئيساً حاد عن تهذيبه

    تَغوَى الرعية حين يَغوى الريِّس

    So beware a leader who strays from his civility

    The commoners go astray when the chief goes astray

  49. ربّي أجرنا من رئيسٍ مفسدٍ

    يطوي رداء الحق ثم يدلِّس

    My Lord, protect us from a corrupting leader

    Who folds the gown of truth then cheats

  50. بشفاعة العذراء مريم إنها

    باب الرجا ومن الأعادي محرَس

    By the intercession of the Virgin Mary, she

    Is the gate of hope and from enemies protected

  51. قد قدست قبل الخلائق كلهم

    واللَه منها الخالق المُتأنِّس

    She was sanctified before all creatures

    And God from her is the intimate Creator

  52. بِكرٌ دعاها اللَه قبل كيانها

    وبمدحه وثنائه تتقدس

    A virgin, God called her before her existence

    And by His praise and glorification she becomes holy

  53. لبست رداءَ المدح منه كاملاً

    ولمدحنا في كل يومٍ تَلبَس

    She wore the gown of praise from Him completely

    And for our praise each day she dresses
