إن كان يوحنّا الحبيبُ المجتبَى

حاز السرائرَ والعلومَ الغامضهْ

If John the beloved chosen one

Attained the mysteries and obscure knowledge

لما اتكا عند العَشا حيناً على

صدرِ المسيح بحالةٍ متفاوضه

When he leaned at supper once upon

The chest of Christ in intimate conversation

ما حظُّ مريم من سمو جلالها

عند ابنها إذ في سماه رابضه

What was the portion of Mary in her sublime glory

With her son when in the heavens settled

حملته في الأحشاء تسعةَ أشهرٍ

وعلى يديها وهو طفلٌ ناهضه

She carried him in her womb nine months

And on her hands as a growing child
