O slanderer of the rose, you have exceeded, falsely accusing,

Like the oppressor gone astray in his transgression.

You angered the rose's beautiful radiance by trespassing,

So God cast you into wrath for your sin.

You denounced beauty, O you, and came with

Something different, so you lost propriety in your error.

Does the critic with a scowl praise the eyes?

Or does the toddler praise what drips from his nose?

Why, O coarse spirit, do you crave what

Has pleased in the palm of the picker?

While people together praise its beauty,

You remain deaf, having strayed from good sense.

Do you not see your yellow teeth when lips recoil

And the gums stand out resembling a pattern?

They are like the gums of a mule when it yawns

With remnants of grass in the midst of its mouth.
