1. سعدت نفوسٌ بالإله الأعظمِ

    حين ابتغت إكرامَه بالأكرمِ

    The souls rejoiced in the Greatest God

    When they sought to honor Him with the most honorable

  2. قُلْ أكرمُ الإكرام رهبانيّةٌ

    فكأنها نورٌ بليلٍ أدهم

    Say, the most honorable honor is monasticism

    As if it is a light in a dark night

  3. فالنور فاعلمْهُ طريقةُ راهبٍ

    والليل أهلُ العالم المتهدِّم

    So know, the light is the way of a monk

    And the night is the people of the crumbling world

  4. طوباكَ يا من قد دُعيتَ بدعوةٍ

    علويةٍ نحو الكمال المُنعَم

    Congratulations, O you who are called with a

    Sublime call to the Perfect, Beneficent One

  5. سُمِّيتَ ما بين الخلائق راهباً

    متوشحاً بشعار فضلٍ مُعلَم

    You are named among creatures as a monk

    Wearing the mark of known superiority

  6. لُقِّبتَ نورَ العالمين جميعهم

    يا راهباً بل كاملاً إذ ينتمي

    You are titled the light of all worlds

    O monk, or rather perfect one belonging

  7. لا تعجبنْ من فضله وكماله

    إذ هوْ ملاكٌ حاز عفةَ مريم

    Do not wonder at his superiority and perfection

    For he is an angel who attained Mary's chastity

  8. أو ما ترى أفعالَه مخصوصةً

    باللَه نحو خلاصه المتقدم

    Or do you not see his actions as exclusive

    To God, toward his advancing salvation

  9. متبرِّئاً من كل فعلٍ موبقٍ

    يرضَى بموتٍ قبل إثمٍ موثِم

    Free from any damning deed

    Pleased with death before any blemishing sin

  10. يحوي بجسمٍ ذي هيولَى نَعتُهُ

    طُهرُ الملائك ضمن عقلٍ مع فم

    Containing in a body described as

    The angels' purity with a mind and mouth

  11. يمشي الصواب بسيره وسلوكه

    قد داس أسباب العثار بمَنسِم

    Walking uprightly in his way and conduct

    Having trodden over the causes of stumbling with his sandal

  12. قد حاد عن حب الغنَى متبرئاً

    من شهوةٍ وتكبُّرٍ وتكرم

    Turned away from love of wealth, disavowing

    Any desire, arrogance or nobility

  13. يرضى بنزر العيش محقوراً وقد

    دعمته كِلْمات الإله المُدعِم

    Content with the least livelihood, impoverished, and

    Supported by the words of the Sustaining God

  14. إذ قال من يبغضْ أباه وأمَّه

    وبنيه حتى نفسَه يتحكَّم

    Who said: Whoever hates his father and mother

    And his children, even himself, he takes control

  15. ويُقِلَّ يوماً وِقرَ حَملِ صليبه

    يختصُّ بي في ذلك المجد الحمي

    And carries his cross’ burden day after day

    Is special to Me in that splendid praise

  16. زلّاته جزئيةٌ لا تَختشي

    تُمحَى بأدنى فعل برٍّ مُنعِم

    His slips are minor, there is no fear

    Erased by the slightest good deed conferring grace

  17. وإذا هفا قامت بعبء سقوطه

    إخوانُه كي يُنهضوه إن رُمي

    And if he stumbles, his brethren stand

    To raise him up if he falls

  18. وكذ الملائك والإله بنفسه

    يعضدْهُ حقّاً بالصلاح المبرَم

    As do the angels and God Himself

    Truly supporting him with established integrity

  19. إذ كان في أخويَّةٍ مرضيةٍ

    تشفي كلوم النفس بعد تندُّم

    For he is in a satisfying brotherhood

    That heals the wounds of the soul after regret

  20. فيها الرقيب يذُبُّ عن أولادها

    فتراه يمنع كل فعلٍ مُحرَم

    In it the supervisor melts away from his children

    So you see him forbid any prohibited deed

  21. والراهب العمّال يخلو فكرُه

    من كل همٍّ دنيويٍّ مظلم

    And the monastic workers’ minds are empty

    Of any worldly, dark concerns

  22. نادى بأني قد صَلَبتُ تعمُّداً

    جسمي وشهْواتي وعقلي مع فمي

    Proclaiming: I have deliberately crucified

    My body, passions, mind and mouth

  23. فلذاك أضحى بالسرور مسربلاً

    فكأنه مولىً يسود وينتمي

    Thus he is clad in bliss as if a master reigning and belonging

    Adorned with inspiration and grace from

  24. يزدان بالإلهام والإنعام من

    مولاه يوماً بعد يومٍ مُقدَم

    His Master day after day preceding

    An alien, ascetic, self-denying

  25. متغرِّباً متنسكاً متقشفاً

    متوشحاً بالصبر كالليث الكمي

    Clad in patience like a brave lion

    Granted the gifts of the Holy Spirit his lifetime

  26. يعطَى مواهبَ روح قدسٍ دهرَه

    ينمو بكل فضيلةٍ وتكرم

    Growing in every virtue and nobility

    Spending his days in examining his conscience

  27. يقضي بفحص ضميره أيامَه

    متطهراً بالإعتراف الأعظم

    Purifying with the greatest confession

    Crossing from purifying a sin here

  28. يعتاض من تطهير إثمٍ ها هنا

    فيما تطهِّره رسومُ القُوَّم

    While the rites of the correctors purify him

    Attaining salvation as reward for good deeds

  29. حاز الخلاص جزاء فعلٍ صالحٍ

    لما اقتدى بيسوع غير مذمَّم

    When he followed Jesus the Unblemished

    If he lives a good, vigilant life

  30. إن عاش عيشاً صالحاً متيقظاً

    فيموت موتاً للسعادة ينتمي

    He dies a death belonging to happiness

    And obtains from the grace of his Lord’s domain

  31. ويحوز من إنعام بِيعة ربه

    غفرانَ إثمٍ كاملاً ذا أَنعُم

    Complete forgiveness of sin, graceful and pleasant

    Fortified by his brethren’s prayers as

  32. متسلِّحاً بصلاة إخوته كما

    يتسلَّح الجنديْ بسيفٍ مِخذَم

    The soldier fortifies himself with a polished sword

    And his dwelling returns to the highest heaven

  33. ويعود في أعلى السماء مقرُّه

    من فوق سدَّةِ مجده المتسوِّم

    Above the throne of His marked glory

    His Master loves him with the best reward

  34. يحبوه مولاه بخير جزائه

    عما سعى في عمره المتقدم

    For what he strove in his preceding life

    And attains the martyr's crown declaring

  35. وينال إكليل الشهادة معلَناً

    ما بين طُغْمات المَصاف الأكرم

    Among the ranks of the most honorable

    For he is the martyr, a martyr of spirit just as

  36. فهو الشهيد شهيدُ روحٍ مثلما

    يدعى شهيداً ذاك في سفك الدم

    He who sheds blood is called a martyr

    So desire, O you who wants his life

  37. فارغب إذاً يا من يروم حياتَه

    أبديةً بشعارٍ إسكيمٍ سُمي

    Eternal with the mark of a monk

    Turn away from the lowly, transient world, then place

  38. أعرض عن الدنيا الدنية ثم ضع

    من تحت رجلك رأسَها وتقدَّم

    Its head beneath your feet and advance

    Ascending to heaven with effort

  39. مترقياً نحو السماء بمهيعٍ

    قد حده أنطونيوس بالسلَّم

    Defined by Antony on the ladder

    So listen, my brother, to my advice - if you taste it

  40. فاسمع أخي نصيحتي لو ذقتَها

    لخبرتَ لذَّتها وسلِّمْ تَسلَم

    You will know its delight, and submit submitting
