طهارة نفسٍ لا تفيد وتنفعُ

إذا كان جسم النفس بالإثم يَمنعُ

Purity of soul is of no use or benefit

If the body of the soul is prevented by sin

متى خضع الجسم الكثيفُ قوامُه

لعفة نفسٍ كان باللَه يَخضع

When the dense body straightens its constitution

To the chastity of a soul that was obedient to God

يعود كما قد كان من قبل سَقطةٍ

متى كان في الفردوس آدمُ يرتع

It returns as it was before the fall

When Adam was in Paradise grazing

فتركيبُنا بالنفس والجسم قائمٌ

ولا غرو أن الجسم للنفس يَتبع

For our composition is of soul and body

And it is no wonder that the body follows the soul

فإن كنت روحيّاً فأنت مؤلَّهٌ

وإن كنت جسميّاً فأنت مشنَّع

So if you are spiritual then you are godly

And if you are corporeal then you are wicked

طهارة جسمٍ فاقت النفس رفعةً

وتلك من الأملاك أرقى وأرفع

Purity of a body that exceeded the soul in ascent

Is the highest and most noble of angels

فكم بين مجبولٍ على الطهر طبعُه

وكم بين مجبورٍ ثَناه التطبع

So how far between one whose nature is inclined to purity

And one who is compelled, bent by temperament

أقول ولا أخشى بقولٍ مصدّقٍ

يؤيده ثَمْرٌ من الطهر مونِع

I say without fear of contradiction

Supported by the chaste fruit of purity

بأنَّ طُهوراً عند معنى جماله

نظيرُ إلهٍ بالطهارة يَلمع

That purity in the sense of its perfection

Is equivalent to a god shining with purity

فآدم أغواه تألُّهُهُ وقد

تألَّه من بالطهر يوماً يُطَمَّع

For Adam was tempted by his godliness

And he was made godly when one day he lusted

فمن زاد طهراً زاد شِبْهاً بربه

يَخِسُّ وينمو موجِدٌ ومضيَّع

So whoever increases in purity increases in resemblance to his Lord

Diminishing and growing, originator and squanderer

فلا تتعبن يا من يروم عَفافةً

إذا لم يُعنك اللَه لا تتمنَّع

So do not weary yourself, O you who aspires to chastity

If God does not help you, do not resist

فما الطهر إلّا منحةٌ من سخائه

يجود بها طوراً وطرواً يُمَنِّع

For purity is only a gift of His generosity

Which He bestows for a time, stingily and freely

وشاهده منه تبارك أنه

أبى فرضَها إذ كان بالفرض يَشرَع

And the proof of Him, Blessed is He, is that

He refused to obligate it when He legislated

أرى الجسم يُغويني بشوكة شهوةٍ

ويَرشقني الشيطان رشقاً يوَجِّع

I see my body tempting me with the thorn of desire

And Satan striking me with a painful strike

ترانيَ مجروحاً ومحترِقاً معاً

فجرحيَ معْ حرقي أُريد وأَرفع

You see me wounded and scorched together

My wound and my scorching I want removed and lifted

فإنيَ إنسانٌ مهينٌ وذو شقا

فمن منقذٌ من جسمِ موتٍ ويشفع

For I am a disgraced and wretched human

So who can rescue me from a killing body and intercede?

أنادي وقد ناديت من لا يجيبني

سواك أعن يا رب والقلب يَهلع

I call out, and I have called upon the One who does not answer me

Except You, help me O Lord, and the heart is terrified

فإن شئت تطهيري فإنك قادرٌ

تطهِّرني والخصمُ عندك يَجزَع

For if You will my purification, You are capable

To purify me while the adversary trembles before You

بمريم عنوان العفاف اُمِّكَ التي

لديك غدت وهي الشفيعُ المُشفَّع

With Mary, the model of chastity, Your mother

Who has become my intercessor with You
