My covenant with death, the sublimest,
Has captured hearts with faith and proof.
In it I saw the messenger of death spilling forth
From my ribs, with meaning in his gaze.
Formed of bare planks his body's wrought,
Assembled, its composition like a man's.
A figure, yet no ear to hear us
When we cast off a life, all ephemera.
Blind, no eye to look on us
In death's humiliation, shrouded in linen.
Appeared, yet no heart to pity us
In the throes of spirits and bodies in pain.
So he was the cruelest foe to come, avenging
With his palm the harvest of creation, a dual edict.
