O You who were pleased with disgrace for me bare,

My Master, when You came a companion,

And You were born sacred in a place

That became with the mangers of sheep unclean.

Why should I not be, standing, a sharer with You

In disgrace, bent double by Your act, humbled,

    Contemplating with a spiritual insight

The sorrows of Your mother when she saw You in this condition,

She covered You with poor swaddling clothes,

And though Your command rolls up the universe expansive,

You had for a pillow hay and straw

Which the lowliest cattle would not deem a seat.

You cry with the crying of an infant without

In that cold which bites, wrapping You in a garment,

O heart of Mary, how anguished you were

When you saw the richest of creatures destitute.
