1. رويداً رويداً يا حداةَ الركائبِ

    لقد عسفت أخفافُها في الترائبِ

    Slowly, slowly, O swift ships,

    Their hooves have transgressed in the valleys.

  2. وأمُّوا بنا تلك الديار عشيةً

    وقرّوا عيوناً باحتشاد الرغائب

    And they led us to those lands in the evening,

    And lodged eyes with the thronging of desires.

  3. ديارٌ دجاها مطلعٌ يُهتدَى به

    فواعجباً من مشرقٌ في المغارب

    Lands whose dawn is illuminated to be guided,

    So wondrous is the east in the west.

  4. عليها ظلام الأيد يرفل معلناً

    بسرٍّ كتومٍ جامعٍ للمناقب

    Upon it is the darkness of hands fluttering announcing

    With a secret concealed, encompassing virtues.

  5. كأن سناها قابسٌ نوره بدا

    لدى عين مقرورٍ رُمِي بالسباسب

    As if its brilliance almost snuffed out its light

    At the eye of one hurled with misfortunes.

  6. تخال وميض البرق في أفق دجنها

    مجرَّةَ نورٍ أو مصابيحَ راهب

    You imagined the flash of lightning on its gloomy horizon

    A stream of light or the lamps of a monk.

  7. سقاك الحيا ريّاً مُلثّاً هموعُه

    بأفضل مصحوبٍ وأنفع صاحب

    May he who granted you life water you with copious, sweet rain

    With the best company and most beneficial companion.

  8. فكم مرَّ لي في قطرها من مناسكٍ

    خلعت على آثارها كل عائب

    So how often virtuous rituals passed me in its regions

    I took off over its traces all faults.

  9. لثمت بهاتيك العراص ثغورها

    كما لثمت قدماً ثغور ترائبي

    I kissed those tender lips its borders

    As I kissed the feet of its valleys.

  10. قصدتك والنكباء تعصف بيننا

    تحل غشاءً كالمجن المناصب

    I sought you while adversity blew between us

    Settling like impenetrable darkness.

  11. ولما أبت إلا التصدُّرَ في اللقا

    فَصمتُ عراها فاستوت كالمصاحب

    And when it insisted on preceding the meeting

    I broke its neck so it was like a companion.

  12. بطَرفٍ يفوت الطِرفَ عند اندفاقه

    وعزمٍ يفل البيض عند المضارب

    With a glance that misses the glance when it pours forth

    And determination that cracks eggs at contention.

  13. فما زلت أطوي فدفداً بعد فدفدٍ

    وأفري بواديها وكل المشاعب

    So I did not cease winding through valley after valley

    And roamed its valleys and all the branches.

  14. إلى أن بدا ذيل الظلام ممزقاً

    وفرّطَ فيه سلك در الكواكب

    Until the tail of darkness appeared torn

    And the thread of pearls of stars poured forth in it.

  15. وأشرقن أطلال الحمى ورسومه

    ولما تبدى النور قلت لصاحبي

    And the ruins of the protective settlement and its features shone

    And when the light appeared, I said to my companion:

  16. أصاح فما هذا الذي أبهج الفلا

    ضياءً وعمَّ الأفقَ من كل جانب

    "Wake, what is this which delighted the horizon

    With radiance and filled the horizon on all sides?"

  17. فقال هو الحصن الموطد في الورى

    أثيل السجايا والعلا والمواهب

    So he said, "It is the fortified stronghold in existence

    Lofty principles, sublimity, and talents."

  18. فقلت أتعني صيدنايا فقال لي

    نعم ذاك أعني إنني غير كاذب

    So I said, "Do you mean Sidon?" And he said to me

    "Yes, that is what I mean, I am no liar."

  19. فيا حبذا تلك الديار وحبذا ال

    مطيف بها يوماً لفضِّ المعائب

    So excellent are those lands, excellent is

    Roving in them one day to remove faults.

  20. ويا حبذا الحصن الموطد أصله ال

    منيف المباني والبها والمناقب

    And excellent is that fortified stronghold whose roots

    Are lofty building, beauty, and virtues.

  21. يدكدك طود الضد عند قراعه

    ويصدع أعلاه بغير قواضب

    It pounds the opposing peaks when battling them

    And splits their summits without scaffolds.

  22. فنمَّ شذا أرجائه بين معشرٍ

    رأوا أفضل الإحسان ذكر العواقب

    So the scent of its corners wafted amongst a people

    Who saw utmost benevolence as prudent.

  23. فلا السر مبثوثٌ لديهم ولا الهوى

    يميد بهم عند النوى والنوائب

    For neither is the secret being spread among them, nor desire

    Swerving them at resolve and tribulations.

  24. وقد أحرزوا الآداب في معهد التقى

    وقد أخلصتهم نار سبك التجارب

    And they have achieved morals in the institute of piety

    And the fire of tests has purified them.

  25. شكوت إليهم والحنين يسوقني

    إلى حيثما الآمال سوق النجائب

    I complained to them while yearning led me

    To where hopes lead, driving tribulations.

  26. أيا ساكنين الحي باللَه بلِّغوا

    سلامي إلى من هي أعز حبائبي

    O residents of the quarters, for God, convey

    My greetings to she who is most beloved of my loved ones.

  27. ملاذ الورى والذخر في يوم موردي

    إذا ما أتيت اللَه إتية راهب

    The refuge of existence and treasure on the day of my arrival

    When I come to God coming as a devout worshipper.

  28. فلبيك مريم ثم لبيك فأمري

    فإني مطيعٌ لست يوماً بهارب

    So at your service Mary, then at your service, and my matter

    Is that I am obedient, never a fugitive.

  29. أيا فرع يسَّى صرتِ أصلاً لفوزه

    ولا تعجبوا للشمس دون الكواكب

    O branch of Jesse, you have become a root of his success

    And do not be surprised at the sun beneath the planets.

  30. فمعصومةٌ عن كل وصمة قادحٍ

    مبرأةٌ عن كل دعوة عائب

    For she is immune from any blemish of dispraise

    Innocent of any call of fault.

  31. مطهرةٌ حقّاً بمستودع الحشى

    علوت على الثقلين يا خير كاعب

    Truly purified in the repository of the breast

    You ascended above both worlds, O best creator.

  32. ألا يا ابنة الجد المؤثل مجده

    علا مجدها حتى انتهى في المغارب

    Lo, O daughter of glorious ancestry whose glory

    Her glory transcended until it ended in the west.

  33. أمهبط أسرار الإله شكيتي

    إليك من اَعباء الذنوب الرواتب

    O receptacle of the secrets of God, I complained to you

    Of the burdens of sins and worries.

  34. قصدتك والعقل أدلهمَّ من الأسى

    وقد غل أطرافي معاً ومناكبي

    I sought you while the mind guided me

    From sorrow though its edges enveloped me.

  35. أنيري دجوني واعطفي لمذلتي

    وحسبك خاطٍ قد أتاك كتائب

    Illuminate my darkness and show compassion to my humiliation

    It suffices you a sinner who has come to you in battalions.

  36. فلا فوز إلّا في حماك مؤيدي

    ولا رشد إلّا في هداك مصاقبي

    For there is no success but in your protected refuge

    And no guidance but in your guidance my steps.

  37. عليك سلام اللَه ما ناح طائرٌ

    على فنن الأراك نوح النوادب

    Upon you is the peace of God, so long as a bird sang

    In the branches of trees, the weeping of elegists.

  38. عليك سلام اللَه ما اخضلَّتِ الربى

    وقابل ثغرُ الزهر درَّ السحائب

    Upon you is the peace of God, so long as the pasture was verdant

    And the mouth of the flower met the rain of clouds.

  39. عليك سلام اللَه ما أشرق الضحى

    بشمسٍ أزاحت نسجَ تلك الثواقب

    Upon you is the peace of God, so long as the dawn shone

    With a sun that removed the weaving of those plots.

  40. عليك سلام اللَه ما جاد شاعرٌ

    بإبنة فكرٍ حُجِّبَت بالنقائب

    Upon you is the peace of God, so long as a poet was generous

    With the daughter of a thought veiled in purity.
