1. لكَ اللَه من علمٍ إلى الحق رافعِ

    وحَسبُكَ من خيرٍ عن الشر دافعِ

    To you, God has raised knowledge to the truth

    And it is enough for you to ward off evil from good

  2. رددتَ إلينا العقل بعد ظلامه

    منيراً بنورٍ من سنائك ساطع

    You have returned reason to us after its darkness

    Illuminated by the light of your brilliant rising sun

  3. وأنهضته إذ كان في الجهل رابضاً

    فأصبح في حسنٍ من الفضل رائع

    And you have raised it while it was slumbering in ignorance

    So it has become beautifully virtuous

  4. وقد كان في طيِّ الضلالة راتعاً

    له من زُؤان الجهل شرُّ المراتع

    It was hiding in the folds of misguidance

    With the worst dwellings of deep ignorance

  5. فأمسى بنور العلم يزهو بطبعه

    ويسمو جلالاً فوق كل الطبائع

    But with the light of knowledge it now blossoms in nature

    And rises sublime above all natures

  6. فيا لكَ علماً قد أرانا حقائقاً

    إلهيةً يسمو بها كلُّ وادع

    What knowledge you have shown us divine truths

    With which every supplicant rises high

  7. ويا لكَ علماً زان كلَّ مقنَّعٍ

    وزيَّن ربّاتِ الحُلَى والمقانع

    What knowledge has adorned every devout one

    And embellished the adorned maidens and veiled ladies

  8. ويا لكَ علماً رادعاً كلَّ جاهلٍ

    فأقبلَ طوعاً هائباً سيف رادع

    What knowledge, deterring every ignorant one

    So he comes willingly, awed, deterred by the sword

  9. أرانا طريق اللَه ديناً وذمةً

    مشيراً إلى أحكامه في الشرائع

    You have shown us the path of God in religion and conscience

    Pointing to His laws in the canons

  10. عرفنا به الشرع الشريف كأنه

    يشير إلينا نحوه بالأصابع

    We have come to know it as though it gestures to us

    Toward it with fingers, this noble divine law

  11. وقلدنا قسطاس حقٍّ محرَّرٍ

    وسيطاً بعدلٍ بين شارٍ وبائع

    And you have given us the balance of established truth

    An impartial judge between buyer and seller

  12. وأثبتَ فيه حقَّ أجرٍ وأُجرةٍ

    وإرثٍ وأَرشٍ والقِصاصِ المضارع

    And you have affirmed in it the right of pay and wages

    And inheritance and wergild and lex talionis

  13. وعَدَّ السفاحَ الرذلَ فِسقاً وقد نهى

    عن الغُبَّر المحذورِ عند المُضاجع

    And deemed the wanton killer to be corrupt when he prohibited

    Abomination from the forbidden in conjugal beds

  14. وحقَّق قول اللَه أصدق حاكمٍ

    وفنَّد فيه رأيَ كل منازع

    And you have proven the word of God to be the most truthful judge

    And refuted in it the view of every disputant

  15. فلم تر خيراً في قضاياه ضائعاً

    ولم تر شرّاً عنده غيرَ ضائع

    So you have not seen any good lost in His judgments

    Nor any evil unpunished by Him

  16. تسامت به الأخبار فضلاً وقدْرُهم

    تعالى فأضحى طالعاً فوق طالع

    Through it, reputations have risen in merit, and their status

    Has ascended above every rising star

  17. لهم سطوةٌ تعنو الملوك لحكمها

    فلم تر مأموراً لهم غيرَ طائع

    They have authority making kings subordinate to their rule

    For you have not seen any of their subjects disobedient

  18. لهم فصل حقّ اللَه في كل مشكلٍ

    لهم دان لكن للسوى غير خاضع

    They distinguish the truth of God in every problem

    They have humbled all but the proud will not submit

  19. وناهيك من قومٍ همُ النور والهدى

    هم الملح بل هم قوت نفسٍ لجائع

    And needless to say, they are the light and the guidance

    They are the salt, no, they are the food of the hungry soul

  20. هم الغيث ثم الغوث في كل دامعٍ

    هم الموئل المقصود من كل هالع

    They are rain, then relief for every weeping eye

    They are the destination sought by every perplexed one

  21. همُ الحق والمحراب في كل قِبلةٍ

    همُ السُلَّمُ الراقي لخاشٍ وخاشع

    They are truth and direction for every prayeral niche

    They are the ladder lifting the timid and devout

  22. فيا عصبةً جلَّت فجلَّ مقامها

    فكانوا لسانَ اللَه يوم المجامع

    O party exalted! Exaltation befits your station

    For you were God's tongue on the day of the council

  23. وأثبتمُ الإيمان بالحق قائماً

    وفنَّدتمُ آراء أهل البدائع

    And you established faith in the truth, standing firm

    And refuted the opinions of the people of innovation

  24. كأريوسَ نسطورٍ وبيروسَ بالما

    ومع فُوِتيُسْ يعقوبُ ذاك البرادعي

    Like Arius, Nestorius, and Pyrrhus the heedless

    And with them James and that fabricating Jacobite

  25. بكم تم أمر اللَه في كل حُجَّةٍ

    يراها وليس ما ترون بمانع

    Through you God's affair was completed in every proof

    He sees but there is nothing you see that prevents Him

  26. قُصاراكمُ أن تُحكموا كلَّ حكمة

    بها العقل ملتذٌّ بحُسن المسامع

    Your excellence is that you judge every wisdom

    That delights the mind with good audition

  27. فإنكم والعلم نورٌ لمبتدٍ

    وحصنٌ لكهلٍ ثم ثَديٌّ لراضع

    For you are a light for the novice with knowledge

    A fortress for the veteran, then a breast for the suckling babe

  28. صراطٌ يجوز الناسُ منه إلى الهدى

    ومركز فضلٍ عند راءٍ وسامع

    A path the people pass over toward guidance

    And a center of virtue for observer and listener

  29. لقد زانت الأعمالُ منكم علومَكم

    كما زُيِّنَ الخدُّ الأسيل بشافع

    Indeed, your deeds have adorned your knowledge

    As the flushed cheek adorns the slender branch

  30. أيا عالماً فالعلمُ يَبغيكَ عاملاً

    فما الفضلُ في علمٍ بدا غير نافع

    O scholar, knowledge seeks you as one who acts

    For what virtue lies in useless knowledge?

  31. رويدَك قد أركبتَ نفسَك مركباً

    من الكبر في بحر العناد المنازع

    Restrain yourself, you have mounted your soul

    On a ship of arrogance in the sea of contention

  32. فإياك والبحرَ الثَّجَاجَ بمائه

    كفرعونِ مصرَ المبتلى بالفجائع

    Beware the turbulent sea in its waters

    Like Pharaoh of Egypt, tested with calamities

  33. لقد صار مفجوعاً بنفسٍ عنيدةٍ

    فأحقِرْ بمفجوعٍ وأعظِمْ بفاجع

    He was devastated by his obstinate soul

    So belittle the devastated and exalt the calamitous

  34. تَمُدُّ الرِيا فخّاً لعُجبٍ تصيدُه

    فواعجباً من عالمٍ فيه قانع

    Vain glory spreads its net to catch your self-admiration

    So wonder at a scholar satisfied with it!

  35. وتسبح في بحر الشراهة عائماً

    بسكرٍ ونهمٍ بين ضالٍ وضائع

    And you swim intoxicated in the sea of profligacy

    Confused and craving between the lost and confused

  36. نديمُك فيه إزدراءٌ بعاقلٍ

    وهُزءٌ بمسكين وقَذفٌ بجائع

    Your companion thereby disdains the reasonable

    And mocks the poor and spurns the hungry

  37. عن الخير ذو بطءٍ وفي الشر منشطٌ

    وفي الطَمَع المرذول أَقدمُ طامع

    Slow toward good but energetic toward evil

    And in despicable greed most covetous

  38. وما بِعتُ من ثَلبٍ وبغضٍ ومَحْسدٍ

    وحقدٍ وإلّا أنت أرخصُ بائع

    And I sell nothing of cunning, hatred, envy

    Malice, spite unless you, the cheapest seller

  39. فيا عاشق الدينار مستهلكاً به

    وقد يصرع الدينارُ كلَّ مُصارع

    O lover of money, squandering it

    Though money lays low every adversary

  40. قبيحٌ بأهل العلم أن يخدعوا به

    وقد عرَفوه شرَّ كل مخادع

    Ugly it is for the learned to be deceived by it

    When they know it is the worst of tricksters

  41. أضاعوا زمام الحق من فقد ذمّةٍ

    مُصنَّعةٍ في العلم أردا الصنائع

    They have lost the reins of truth, lacking principles

    Feigning knowledge, intending only crafts

  42. ومالوا مع الأهواء أنَّى تمايلت

    كما مال غصنٌ بالرياح الزعازع

    And they incline with passions wherever they tilt

    Like a branch tilting with rough winds

  43. فأعطيت ذاك البدخ والقصف حقَّه

    تَرَفُّهَ جسمٍ للمَذَمّات جامع

    So you have given decadence and debauchery their due

    A luxuriating body gathering censures

  44. كأنك في وشي الملابس يافعٌ

    يميل كغصنٍ مُزهرِ النور يانع

    As if you in the garb of clothes are a youth

    Swaying like a blooming, delicate branch

  45. عديم الوفا في الود مع كل صاحبٍ

    تَذُمُّ وتُثني بين راجٍ وراجع

    Disloyal in friendship with every companion

    You blame and malign, between returner and returnee

  46. فهذا الذي أحصيتُه فيك ظاهراً

    وربك أدرى بالخفي المواقع

    This which I have counted evident in you

    While your Lord knows best what is concealed

  47. فلا تنه عن خُلْقٍ وتأتيَ مثله

    تكن مثل من يدعو إلى غير سامع

    Do not forbid morals while committing the like

    Be not like one who calls to what he does not hear

  48. وُضِعتَ لبُنيانِ البنين وصوغِهم

    فأحسِنْ بمبنيٍّ وأحسن بواضع

    You were created to build the edifice of mankind and mold them

    So excel with one built and one building

  49. كأنك في الحالين بانٍ وهادمٌ

    وحتامَ يا كذاب لستَ بنافع

    It is as though you destroy and build both

    Stop, liar, you are of no benefit

  50. فإن كنت عن إصلاح نفسك هاجعاً

    فلا ترج بالتعليم تنبيه هاجع

    If you refrain from reforming your own soul

    Then do not aspire to teach the neglected

  51. فإنك والهاجاتِ في الصوت واحدٌ

    ومرعاكمُ حولَ الوحول المناقع

    For you and passions are equal in voice

    And your pastures are around stagnant ponds

  52. فإعلم وعلِّمْ وارضَ واشتدَّ واتَّئد

    وإزهدْ وجاهد مستعداً ودافع

    So know, teach, consent, be firm, persevere

    Be prepared and struggle with restraint

  53. فقم أولاً بالصبر والفضل عاملاً

    وأوجده بعد الفعل في نفس ضائع

    First, act with patience and virtue

    Then engender them after in the bewildered soul

  54. وخذ مريماً في الكل رسماً وقدوةً

    إذا شئت أن تُعزَى إلى خير صانع

    And take Mary as an exemplar and model in all

    If you wish to be guided to the best Maker

  55. بها النجح والإرشاد في كل حالةٍ

    تؤدي إلى الإصلاح نحو المنافع

    Through her is success and guidance in every situation

    Leading to reform for the beneficial

  56. فسارع وقم في باب مريم قارعاً

    فمن شانها تدعو نداء المسارع

    So hurry and knock on the door of Mary

    For it is characteristic of her to call out like one racing

  57. فيا مربعاً قد حل فيه إلهُنا

    وقد خصه من دون كل المرابع

    O cube, in which our God dwelt

    And singled it out over all others like it

  58. وقدسه قبل الوجود وصانه

    له موضعاً من بين كل المواضع

    And sanctified it before existence and protected it

    For Himself a position among all positions

  59. أتمَّ بنا بنيانَ تعليمِ علمِنا

    بأعمالنا يا خير سامٍ وسامع

    Perfect through us the structure of teaching our knowledge

    With our deeds, O best of those who fast and listen
