محبة المال أشقى ما بليتَ به

إن كنت يا راهباً يلهو بك القلقُ

The love of money is the most miserable affliction

If you are a monk troubled by anxiety

فمن تَريَّبَ يوماً في أمانته

يسجدْ لدى صنم المال الذي يَمِقُ

Whoever doubts his honesty for a day

Bows before the idol of money that seduces

فكلٌّ شرٍّ تؤدّينا طبيعتُنا

إليه إلّا سرور المال يا حَذِق

For our nature leads us to every evil

Except the joy of money, O Wise One

فلا تغرَّنْك أعوامٌ بها مرضٌ

ولا تهولنْك أتعابٌ بها فَرَق

Do not let years of illness deceive you

Nor let troubles that tear you apart frighten you

فهذه خدعةُ المَحَّال يُهْجِسُها

كيما تُصَرَّ مُسرّاً ما به السبق

These are the delusions of the impossible that

He excites so you hurry to what has passed

تذكَّرِ الآن ما قد قيل ممتثلاً

أصل الشرور هو الأموال لو تثق
