    O noble traveler, go gently

Though hearts are sad that you must leave

You were never one to be unkind, so why

Have your ways changed on this day?

    What calamity has struck Beirut?

She weeps today with no crocodile tears

Alas, Alas! Daghr's son is dead

The man of merit makes even the noble weep

To whom can we turn for light after you, O Beacon

    When troubles darken our world?

You were a light and fire upon

Any betrayal of the cause of truth

My heart yearns for a land where truth is oppressed

    And falsehood grows bold

O, Abu Al-Fadl, for the virtuous have eyes

Which still shed tears for you

In the Protection of the Merciful you raise a noble one

    Who bore those virtues

The rains nourished him, but if not

Our falling tears would have sufficed

    Sleep now, for the magnificent

Signs you left remain guiding lights

Sleep now, for the memory of you

Still stirs the dormant among us

We weep not because you have died

    For death comes to all

We weep because we have lost

A man, and men of merit are so few
