1. من شقيقٍ واقحوانٍ ووردٍ

    وخزامى ونرجسٍ وبهارِ

    From carnations, cyclamens, roses,

    Lilacs, narcissi, and spring flowers

  2. زهرةٌ عند زهرةٍ عند أخرى

    كاقترانِ الدينارِ بالدينار

    Flower beside flower beside another

    Like coin beside coin and dinar by dinar

  3. فرأَينا الربيعَ في شهرِ كانو

    ن يفوقُ الربيعَ في آذارِ

    We saw spring in the month of Kânûn

    Surpass spring itself in March

  4. ورأَينا الأقمارَ أقمارَ حسنٍ

    مسنَ بين الزهورِ في أقمارِ

    We saw moons, moons of beauty

    Walking amid the flowers in moons

  5. كلُّ لحظٍ يفاخرُ النرجسَ الغضَّ

    وخدٍّ يزهو على الأزهارِ

    Each moment vying with the proud narcissi

    And cheeks blooming over the flowers

  6. فترى الوردَ سارياً في خدودٍ

    فوقَ وردٍ في روضةٍ غير سارِ

    You see roses flowing on cheeks

    Above roses in a meadow not bleak

  7. زار وردُ الخدودِ وردَ رياضٍ

    فازدَهى عزةً بهذا المزارِ

    The roses of cheeks visited meadow roses

    Gaining glory from this visit

  8. ذاك وردٌ في الروض يذبلُ في

    يوم وذا الوردُ دائِماً في ازدهارِ

    Those roses in the meadow wilt in a day

    While these roses ever blooming and gay

  9. وترى الاقحوان يبسمُ للثَّغرِ

    يباري من حسنهِ ما يباري

    You see sweet William smiling at lips

    Rivaling their beauty without slip

  10. وثغورَ الحسانُ تبسمُ بالفو

    زِ عليهِ تبسُّم الانتصارِ

    Laughing lips smile in victory

    Over it, the smile of triumph see

  11. والقدودَ الهيفاءَ تخطرُ في الروضِ

    ازدراءً بغصنهِ الخطَّارِ

    Slender waists flutter in the meadow

    Scornful of its flirtatious branch

  12. تلك يُثنى قوامُها بالهوى السا

    كن والغصنُ بالهواءِ الجاري

    Their figures are praised for devotion

    While the branch for passing wind's motion

  13. وعطورُ الأزهارُ تخفى حياءً

    من شذا كلُّ غادةٍ معطارِ

    Flower scents hide shyly

    From the fragrance each aromatic tree

  14. وثمارٍ حلت بهاءً وحلَّت

    لبنان محرمات الثمارِ

    Fruits came in splendor and came

    To Lebanon, the forbidden fruits

  15. لو بدا مثلها لآدم ما جازت

    عليه خديعةُ الغرارِ

    If it appeared to Adam like this

    Deceit wouldn’t have led to dismissal

  16. لاحَ فيها شرابها من صفاءٍ

    من صفا الكاس لاح لون العقارِ

    The air there gleamed with such clarity

    As gleamed the wine’s color, pure without disparity

  17. فهي الجنَّة التي وعد اللَه

    لأتقى عبادهِ الأبرارِ

    It's the paradise God had promised

    To His most pious and righteous

  18. دخلوها بلا حسابٍ ولا بعثٍ

    ولا توبةٍ من الاوزارِ

    They entered without reckoning or resurrection

    And remorse for burdens

  19. وثقوا بالباري بان ينفر الذنب

    فجاؤا يرون صنع الباري

    Trusting in their Creator to avert sin

    They came seeing the work of the Creator

  20. يُبصِرون التي سُليمانُ لم يلبس

    حُلاها في مجدهِ والفخارِ

    Seeing what Solomon in his glory never wore

    Despite his splendor, pride, and war

  21. إِنما الوردُ للرياضِ شبابٌ

    كزمانِ الشبابِ في الأعمارِ

    Verily, the rose’s youth in gardens

    Like the days of youth in years lasting

  22. وهو بين الزهورِ عصرُ افتخار

    مثل عصر العباس في الأعصارِ

    In flowers, it reigns glory

    Like Abbasids’ reign in history

  23. زار جوداً فكلل الزهرَ منها

    بعد تاج الندى بتاجِ النضارِ

    Charity visited and crowned flowers

    After crown of dew, with garland of vigor

  24. معرضٌ فيهِ كل ما يُنبتُ القطرُّ

    ويزهو به على الأَقطارِ

    Displayed there, whatever Nile hands nurture

    And it prides on lands afar and asunder

  25. أَنبتت زهرَهُ أكفُّ بني النيل

    فأَغنت عن وابل الامطارِ

    Sons of the Nile grew its flowers

    Enriching it beyond need of showers

  26. وجهادُ الفتى إِذا تمَّ يُغني

    عن جهادِ القضاءِ والأَقدارِ

    And youth's struggle when fulfilled, enriches

    Beyond fate and destiny fetches

  27. هو وصف لم يكفنا النثر فيه

    فاستعنَّا عليه بالأَشعارِ

    It’s beyond prose to describe this scene

    We resorted to poetry, more keen

  28. إِنما الشعرُ للتغزُّلِ والأَزهار

    تدعو تغزُّل الأَفكارِ

    Poetry is only for love and flowers

    They invite thoughts of love for hours

  29. أَولا تُبصر السكارى وقد طابَ

    لهم في الرِياض زهو الخمارِ

    Don’t you see revelers, joyous there

    In gardens, drunk with wine sans care

  30. وتأَمّل فهل ترى في سوى

    الأَغصان تشدو صوادحُ الأطيارِ

    Look! Do you see, but branches laden

    With birds singing ballads bidden

  31. وانظر النحلَ أيُّ طيبٍ جناها

    من سوى الزهر في ندى الاَسحارِ

    And behold bees - which scent carried them

    Save flowers, in dawn’s air that led them

  32. وانظر الطلَّ هل يشابه في

    غير غصونِ كرائِمَ الأحجارِ

    And look - does dew resemble aught

    But branches, gems and pearls so fraught

  33. وتأَمّل فَراشة الروض هل

    تدنو لغيرِ الأَنوارِ والأَنوارِ

    A butterfly - does it frequent aught

    But flowers, lights; it flutters, caught

  34. إِنما الزهر نورنا في حياةٍ

    مُلئت بالظلام والأَكدارِ

    Flowers are but our light in a life

    Filled with darkness, grief and strife

  35. جمعت فيه كل لذة نفسٍ

    مثلما جمعت بذات السوارِ

    I gathered there all joys of the soul

    As gathered in bracelet charms whole

  36. فالغواني في الحسنِ جنَّة قلبِ

    مثلما الزهر جنَّة الأَنظارِ

    Passion of beauty is to the heart

    Like flowers are to the seeker’s dart
