1. كم شقيٍّ يُساقُ للإعدامِ

    كان أولى برحمةِ الأحكامِ

    How many miserable souls are led to execution,

    Who deserved the mercy of verdicts,

  2. ولكَم في القصورِ ناعمُ بالٍ

    وهو أحرى بالنارِ ذات الضرام

    And how many in palaces live in luxury,

    When they deserve the hellfire's torment.

  3. قاتلُ النفسِ دونهُ قاتل الجسمِ

    فليس النفوسُ كالأجسامِ

    The killer of the soul is worse than the killer of the body,

    For souls are not like bodies.

  4. ما لهذي الحبالِ تعفو عن العا

    لي ويعلو بها وضيعُ المقامِ

    Why do these ropes spare the wealthy

    And are raised for the despised and vile?

  5. ما سمعنا بأَنَّهم عَلَّقوا يو

    ماً غنياً بها ولا في المنامِ

    We never heard that they hanged

    A wealthy person, not even in a dream.

  6. أَفكلُّ الأَنام أهلُ صلاحٍ

    ما خلا ذا الفقير بين الأنامِ

    Are all people virtuous,

    Except for this poor man among people?

  7. إن يقِ المالُ ربَّهُ الاثمَ

    فالفقرُ يجرُّ الفقيرَ للآثامِ

    If wealth keeps its owner from sin,

    Then poverty drags the poor to sins.

  8. فاقتلوا الفَقرَ إِن عَدَلتُم فإَنَّ

    أَصلُ البلا ورأسُ الخِصامِ

    So kill poverty if you are just, for it is

    The origin of evil and the source of conflict.

  9. واحفظوا أَنفساً على صورةِ

    اللَهِ فليست تُعدُّ في الأَغنامِ

    And protect souls made in the image

    Of God, for they are not counted among the cattle.

  10. ليس بالقتلِ ينتفي القتل بل با

    لعلمِ تُمحى جهالة الأقوامِ

    Killing does not end killing, but rather knowledge

    Eliminates the ignorance of people.

  11. إِن يكُن جرمُهُ عظيماً فهذا

    الجرمُ منكم أَحقُّ بالاعظامِ

    If his crime is grave, then that

    Crime is more deserving of your respect.

  12. فهو للحاجة ابتغى القتل ما تب

    غونَ انتم بقتلِه من مرامِ

    He sought murder out of need. What do you

    Seek through his murder and death?

  13. لو نفى القتل في البرية قتلا

    لانتفى القتلُ قبل ذي الأَيامِ

    If killing in the wilderness were ended, killing

    Would not end before the Day of Judgment.

  14. يا لها ساعةً وقد أَقبلوا فيهِ

    يخوضون موجَ ذاك الزِحامِ

    Oh what an hour it was when they came

    Riding the waves of that tumultuous throng!

  15. تحتويه الفرسانُ من كل صوب

    كمليكٍ من الملوكِ العظامِ

    The horsemen contained them from all sides

    Like great kings among the great kings.

  16. وكأَنَّ الجموع بعضُ الرعايا

    وقفوا في طريقهِ للسلامِ

    It was as if the crowds were just some peasants

    Who stood in his way to peace.

  17. فاشرأَبَّ الجميعُ يطلبُ ان يعر

    فَ ذاكَ المسوقَ للاعدامِ

    And the crowds were all craning their necks to see

    That pitiful one led to his execution.

  18. إذ بدا وهو ناحلُ الجسم كهلٌ

    رشقَ الشيب رأسه بسهامِ

    Then he appeared, slender in body, an old man,

    His head sprinkled with arrows of white hair.

  19. فتولَّى النفوسَ روعٌ لأَنَّ الشيبَ

    يدعو النفوسَ الاحترامِ

    The souls were struck with awe, for white hair

    Calls souls to respect.

  20. ثمَّ ساد السكوتُ حتى لقد تسمع

    نَقرَ القلوبِ في الأَجسامِ

    Then silence reigned, until you could hear

    The beating of hearts in bodies.

  21. وانثَنَت أَعينُ الجميع إلى الد

    كَّةِ حيثُ الجلادُ دون اهتمامِ

    And all eyes turned down to the platform

    Where the executioner stood, indifferent.

  22. وإذا بالشقيِ يرقى إليها

    دونَ ما رهبةٍ ولا إِحجامِ

    And there the wretched one climbed up

    Without any fear or hesitation.

  23. سمعَ الحكم هادئاً ثمَّ صلَّى

    مُهدياً للنبيِ أَذكى السلامِ

    He heard the verdict calmly, then prayed,

    Sending blessings upon the brightest prophet.

  24. وأَلفاظِهِ الخفيفةِ وقعُ الرَعدِ

    في ذلك السكوتِ التمامِ

    And his gentle words had the impact of thunder

    In that perfect silence.

  25. ثمَّ ولّى كأَنه لم يكن إِلا

    م كطيفٍ مضى معَ الأحلامِ

    Then he turned away as if he had merely been

    An apparition that passed with dreams.

  26. وتراءي للناسِ فيهِ خطيبٌ

    صامتٌ ناطقٌ بأَسمى كلامِ

    And in him the people saw a silent

    Orator, speaking the highest words:

  27. يا ذوي المالِ أنتم شركاءُ

    لي ولكن بغيرِ هذا الحمام

    "Oh wealthy ones, you are partners of mine,

    Though not in this misfortune.

  28. لو أردتم لما ارتكبتُ المَعاصي

    لو أردتم لكنتُ خِدنَ سلامِ

    Had you wished, I would not have sinned.

    Had you wished, I would have been sheltered in peace.

  29. فاتقوا اللَه في نفوسٍ رماها

    الفَقرُ في أَسرِ شُقوةٍ وعُرامِ

    So fear God for the souls that poverty has thrown

    Into misery and nakedness.

  30. من يَسيرِ الأَموالِ تُقصَدُ من لعبٍ

    ومن زينةٍ ومن ايلامِ

    Those with ample wealth pursue play,

    Adornment and torment.

  31. يستفيدُ الفقيرُ علماً وتقوى

    وبهذا يِقلُّ فعلُ الحرامِ

    The poor gain knowledge and piety,

    And so decrease committing sins."
