    روض فيما مضى من الأزمانِ

    This is a story of a breeze that blew

    In days of yore and times gone by

  2. وردت في كتابِ سحرٍ قديمٍ

    خطَّه فكرُ ساحر شيطانِ

    Written in an ancient book of magic

    Penned by the thoughts of a devilish sorcerer

  3. لم يكن قادراً على فهم مع

    ناهُ سوى شاعرٍ لعوب المعاني

    None could grasp its meaning

    Except a poet well-versed in subtlety of meaning

  4. وُجد الشعرُ حينما وُجدَ السح

    ر شقيقين ليس يفترقانِ

    Poetry was found when magic was found

    Two brothers never to part or separate

  5. قيل إِن النسيم قد كان يوماً

    يتمشَّي على رُبى لبنانِ

    It's said this breeze once walked

    On the hills of Lebanon wandering aimlessly

  6. هائِماً لا يقرُّ منهُ قرار

    من مكانٍ يميلُ نحو مكانِ

    Restless, moving from place to place

    At times kissing flowers, at others

  7. تارةً يلثم الزهور وطوراً

    يرتمي في معاطفِ الأغصانِ

    Tossing in the bosom of branches

    When he came upon the old home of a revered Elder

  8. إِذ أَتى منزلاً قديماً لشيخٍ

    من شيوخِ القرى رفيع الشانِ

    He burst in unannounced in great haste

    Where a girl sat spinning wool

  9. فانبرى داخلاً إليهِ من الكو

    ةِ وثباً منغير ما استئذانِ

    Safe from impropriety, her hands weaving magic and love

    The impudent visitor ruffled her soft hair

  10. حيث بنتٌ للشيخ تغزل صوفاً

    وهي في مأمن من الحدثانِ

    And golden strands fell over dark lashes and cheeks as red as blood

    The breeze saw a beauty he had never before seen in a human

  11. تغزلُ الصوف كفُّها ولها جف

    نانِ بالسحر والهوى غزِلانِ

    And so began staring at her, bewildered as a lovestruck youth

    This fickle, weightless being, so inconsistent in all affairs

  12. عبثَ الزائِرُ الجريءُ بشعرٍ

    ناعمٍ فوق رأسها الفَتانِ

    Who reveals lovers' secrets to all gossips and rumor-mongers

    Became completely smitten with the Elder's daughter

  13. فتدلَّت اطرافهُ الشقرُ من فو

    قِ جفونٍ سودٍ وخدٍّ قانِ

    Hopelessly in love, content just to see her at all times

    Wherever she was, inside the house or in the garden amid narcissi and basil

  14. ورأَى ذل النسيمُ جمالاً

    ما رآهُ من قبل في إنسانِ

    His only care was to see her happy, blissful and safe

    Making himself cold when she felt cold, hot when she felt hot

  15. فغدا شاخصاً إليها مُديماً

    نحوها نظرة الفتى الحيرانِ

    Changing with the seasons however they transitioned

    When night fell in the icy grip of winter

  16. ذلك الأهوَجُ الخفيفُ المرائي

    القليلُ الثَباتِ في كل شانِ

    He came to her as a gentle, mild, lukewarm breeze

    When the day was sweltering as if aflame

  17. فاضحُ العاشقين ناشرُ اسرار

    الهوى بين كلّ قاصٍ ودانِ

    He blew from the mountain peaks reviving body and soul

    When he sensed her slightest discomfort

  18. اصبح الآن بابنة الشيخ صبّاً

    مستهاماً بحبها متفاني

    He rushed off to the orchards to bring her

    The sweetest-voiced birds with the loveliest songs and melodies

  19. عاشق لا يُرى ويكفيهِ منها

    ان يراها في كل حالٍ وآنِ

    When the season turned to autumn

    The garden faded like a gloomy face

  20. حيث كانت يكونُ في البيت او في ال

    روض بين النسرين والريحانِ

    Her room empty of roses, narcissi, and lavender

    He followed the butterfly through the fields gathering flowers

  21. همُّهُ كل همِّهِ أن يراها

    في سرورٍ وغبطةٍ وأَمانِ

    As bouquets as lovely as any garden’s

    Of carnelian, lapis lazuli, jasmine, amber, and white as pearls

  22. جاعلاً نفسه كما تشتهي حراً فبرداً

    على اختلافِ الزمانِ

    Birds with bright wings like mirrors flocked to her casement

    When she had a book in hand

  23. فإذا الليلُ كان ليلَ شتاءٍ

    يخِزُ البردُ فيه وخز السنانِ

    That needed careful study before turning the page

    He would blow and flip the page

  24. صار حالاً إلى هواءٍ لطيفٍ

    فاترٍ وفقَ نسبةِ الميزانِ

    Saving her the effort of wetting her fingers

    And how often he lingered there

  25. وإِذا اليومُ كان يوماً شديداً

    يلذعُ الحرَّ فيه كالنيرانِ

    When drowsiness overtook her, shutting her eyelids

    Revealing the beauty of her wrists above her heaving breast

  26. جاءها من ذرى الجبال بنفحٍ

    منعشِ الروح منعشِ الجثمانِ

    He would slide back the curtain and bring his lips

    Near hers to drink his fill while she in slumber felt no shame

  27. وإِذا استشعر انقباضاً بها يو

    ماً مضى مسرعاً إلى البستانِ

    For so long he lived consumed by his passion for her

    His heart tranquil, free of worries or cares

  28. وأتاها من الطيور الشوادي

    بأَرقِّ الأنغامِ والأَلحانِ

    Believing joy was meant to last forever

    But is that possible in an uncertain world?

  29. وإِذا الفصلُ كان فصلَ خريفٍ

    وغدا الروضُ مثل وجه العاني

    Farewell love, O breeze, for you now have a rival

    Who comes to ask for the maid's hand, the fool of all youths

  30. وخلا خدرُها من الزهرِ من ور

    دٍ ومن نرجسٍ ومن اقحوانِ

    With no virtues but overflowing riches

    Tempted by jewels, as women have always been

  31. سار خلف الفراش في الحقل يج

    ديه كما تُجتنى زهورُ الجنانِ

    She accepted him as husband, and the true lover is left in despair

    Alas, that worldly wealth beats affection every time

  32. وأتاها منه بباقاتٍ حسنٍ

    زاهياتٍ بأَجملِ الأَلوانِ

    However gentle the breeze, however fragrant its breath

    What can it do without riches and glittering jewels?

  33. من عقيقٍ ولا زوردٍ وياقو

    تٍ وتبرٍ وأَبيضٍ كالجمانِ

    My heart burns for him rejected and disgraced

    After glory, now condemned to dishonor and shame

  34. تتجارى في خدرها طائراتٍ

    لامعاتِ الجناح كالعقيانِ

    Standing at her window, lamenting piteously as if torn by loss

    Cooing mournfully like a dove, hissing like snakes

  35. وإِذا كان في يديها كتابٌ

    درسه محوجٌ إلى الإِمعانِ

    And how a malicious spirit whispers to him

    Though before he never dealt in wickedness

  36. وانتهت من قراءة الوجه منه

    ثمَّ همت بدرسٍ وجه ثانِ

    Inciting him to rage and destroy her home with a storm

    As the wedding hour drew near he approached the church bent on ruin

  37. فتراهُ بنفخَةٍ قَلَبَ الوجهَ

    فليست تحتاجُ مدَّ البنانِ

    Patience gone, his wrath raged like a lion's

    Stirring up dust that blinded every eye

  38. ولكم وقفةٌ له ليس تُنسى

    عند ذاك السرير ذي الأركانِ

    He swept through extinguishing the candles in sacrilege

    With no respect for the sanctity of the place

  39. وقد استحوذ النعاسُ عليها

    وتولّى الكرى على الأجفانِ

    In creased fury he drained the chalices till nothing remained for the sacrament

    The bell ringer, shocked, sounded the bells of sorrow

  40. يجتلي حسنَ معصمين أَضاءا

    فوق ملموم صدرها الملان

    But all this succeeded in nothing, the wedding proceeded despite the chaos

    The bitter hatred boiled in his breast like a volcano

  41. ولكم زحزح الستار وأدنى

    ثغره فوق ثغرها الظمآن

    As he roamed howling, beseeching the winds for support but finding none

    Amid hurricanes, gales, whirlwinds and poisonous storms

  42. فرواها كما ارتوى دون أن

    تخجل منه وليس بالخجلان

    Years later he came with an army swirling like a deluge

    Spreading terror, turning children's hair gray with fear

  43. هكذا عاش في هواها زماناً

    ناعمَ البال خاليَ الأَشجانِ

    Leaving destruction in his wake, glorying in the death of civilization

    He reached her house thinking to blow it sky-high like smoke

  44. حاسباً أنَّ للصفاء دواماً

    هل دوام الصفاءِ بالإمكانِ

    But instead saw a cradle with a crying baby

    And by the cradle his mother, racked by tremors of fear

  45. ودِّعِ الحبَّ يا نسيمُ فقد جا

    ءَك خصمٌ أَقوى إلى الميدانِ

    His strength gave way, and love triumphed over hatred, for love rules all

    He fell by her child and flung himself into the cradle, rocking it like a lad

  46. جاءُ من يخطبُ الفتاةَ فتىً في

    عصرهِ كان أجهَلَ الفتيانِ

  47. ما له ميزةٌ على غيرهِ إِلا م

    بمالٍ يفيض كالغدران

  48. غرَّها كثرَة الحلي فمالت

    وقديماً تهوى الحليَّ الغواني

  49. رضيَتهُ بعلا فواخيبةَ الآ

    مالِ من ذلك المحبّ العاني

  50. آه مهما يكُ النسيمُ لطيفاً

    طيِّبَ النشرِ عاطرَ الأردانِ

  51. ما الذي يستطيعهُ دون مال

    وحُلّيٍ بهيَّة اللمعانِ

  52. لهفَ قلبي عليهِ بعد مزيدِ

    العزِّ يمسي في ذلّة وهوان

  53. واقفاً خلف كوَّة البيت يشكو

    بأَنينٍ كأَنَّة الثكلانِ

  54. ولهُ كالحمامِ حيناً هديلٌ

    وفحيحٌ حيناً كما الافعوانِ

  55. ولكم حدَّثَتهُ بالشرِّ نفسٌ

    ما لها بالشرور قبلُ يدانِ

  56. فابتغى ان يصيرَ عاصفَ ريحٍ

    هداماً بيتها على السكان

  57. وللإدن وافتِ الكنيسةَ بالمو

    كب تبغي إتمامَ عقدِ القرانِ

  58. عيلَ صبراً فثارَ ثورةَ ليثٍ

    وأَثارَ الغبارَ ملءَ العيانِ

  59. وانبرى للشموع يطفئها غي

    ظاً ولم يحترم جلالَ المكانِ

  60. زاد حقداً فرامَ تجفيف ما في ال

    كاس حتى تبقى بلا قربان

  61. ومديرُ الناقوس مما اعتراهُ

    أَسمَعَ الناسَ دقَّةَ الاحزانِ

  62. كلُّ هذا لم يُجدِ نفعاً وتمَّ ال

    عرسُ رغماً عن ذلك الهيجانِ

  63. فمضى هائماً على وجههِ والصدرُ

    يغلي بالحقدِ كالبركان

  64. ساحَ في الأَرضِ مستغيثاً ملو

    ك الريح من كلّ صادقٍ معوانِ

  65. بين هَيفٍ وزَعزَعٍ ودَروجٍ

    وسمومٍ وعاصفٍ مرنانِ

  66. ثم وافى من بعد عامين في جيش

    خضمٍّ يموجُ كالطوفانِ

  67. يزرعُ الرُعبَ في البلادِ ويكسو

    هوله الشيب مفرَقَ الشبّانِ

  68. خارباً في طريقهِ كلَّ ما مرَّ

    عليهِ من عامرِ البلدانِ

  69. وصلَ البيتَ وهو يحسبُ أَن يُد

    رِيهُ في الفضاء مثلَ الدخانِ

  70. إذ يرى في جوانب الدارِ مهداً

    فيهِ طفلٌ يبكي بغير بيانِ

  71. ولدى الطفل امُّهُ وهي من خو

    فٍ عليه شديدةُ الرجفانِ

  72. فتلاشت قواهُ وانتصرَ الحبُّ

    عليهِ والحبُّ ذو سلطانِ

  73. فجثا قرب طفلها آخذاً عن

    ها يهزُّ السريرُ كالغلمانِ
