O life, I did not play in it for long,
Rather, fate decreed that I die young,
I was in the garden of youth, a plant
Growing little by little and branch by branch,
The spring adorned it with flowers until
Death snapped off a fresh, green twig,
To knowledge, I bid farewell every day
From one who found knowledge his nourishment,
And I send a greeting from the darkness of the grave
To my loved ones, morning and evening,
My close companions with whom I shared
Joy and a pleasant life,
Fate has separated us and scattered us apart
If only this had not been destined,
O my loved ones, if you fulfill my covenant,
For in covenants, I was always faithful,
My father, O friends, is a frail old man
I do not think he can handle this tragedy,
Comfort him with patience, may you
Console his fatherly affection,
And for my mother, give condolences and be
For her in my place a source of strength,
My nearness brought her joy, now how
After me, will her joy be fulfilled?
And my brothers - my heart yearns for them -
How hard for them is this miserable separation!
The calamities of fate have stricken them
Leaving no path for consolation,
Mother, I am not in my grave alone,
Rather, I see myself embracing my brothers,
Have stretched out their hands to greet me,
You have conveyed my greeting by visiting my grave
So stay for a while here weeping for me,
Shed tears upon it, for they will moisten
My bones, bringing them sad tales of you,
And plant willows above my tomb
For I often took shade beneath them,
The yellowing of willows is sweet to my eye
As is their shade cooling me.
