A tribal dog, and a dog is better than

All the sons Hawwa bore, be they Arabs or not.

You reviled us, though never in Uhud

Did we fail, nor in Mu'tah when faith was yet green.

    والدِّينُ أَمْرَدُ لَمْ يَيْفَعْ فَيَحْتَلِمِ

    The morn of Mu'tah, pagans drank deep;

Faith was limp, no strength left, no vigor or vim.

And the day of Siffin, after days so harsh,

How much blood was shed for faith, after blood so grim!

In Euphrates, for Al Sibt we were left as

Meat, limbs strewn, moist flesh on dry bone, so slim.

When the ostrich of piety tucked in her feathers,

And the thunder of truth yelled its warning, its threat.

If my face is clouded, ‘tis but blood of ours

That was shed; we poured ours to defend the true dream.

So sit or stand knowing that, were you girded

By other than Ahmad's own House, you'd not rise or sit.

A castle they built, Castle Quraysh so strong

That it shook with indulgence, pleasure, and whim.

When their steeds crept up slow, dragging their riders to

Succor the causes whose time is running thin.

How they held forth their noble hands, white as pearls,

To doom, after glory of all they had been!

A lion they were; and life to them meant only

Gift of themselves to dust, from vigor to rim.
