وغَريرٍ يَقْضي بحُكَْينِ في الرَّا

حِ بجورٍ وفي الهَوى بمُحالِ

With a charming smile that settles disputes amicably,

And with passion that cannot be fulfilled.

للنّقَا رِدْفُهُ وللخُوطِ ما حُمِّ

لَ لِيناً وجِيدُهُ للغَزَالِ

His neck is for pearls, and his body for fine robes,

Gentle and his neck for gazelles.

فَعَلَتْ مُقْلَتاهُ بالصَّبِّ ما تفْ

عَلُ جَدْوَى يديكَ بالأَمْوالِ

His eyelids with kohl do more

Than what your hands can do with money.

لَمْ تُقَسْ بالذي عداكَ مِنَ الخَلْ

قِ فما الشّامِخاتُ مِثْلَ الرِّمالِ

You were not fair to others unlike you,

For the high dunes are not like flat sands.

وإذا شِئْتَ أَنْ تَرى الموتَ في صُو

رَةِ لَيْثٍ في لِبْدَتَيْ رِئْبالِ

If you wish to see death in the form

Of a fierce lion with grinning teeth.

فالْقَهُ غَيْرَ أَنّما لِبْدَتَاهُ

أَبْيَضٌ صارِمٌ وأَسْمَرُ عالِ

Meet him, though his teeth

Are pearly white and tan high.

تَلْقَ لَيْثاً قَدْ قُلِّصَتْ شَفَتاهُ

فَيُرَى ضاحِكاً لِعُبْسِ الصِّيالِ

You will meet a lion whose lips are shortened,

So he looks smiling at the severity of warriors.
