مَنْ شَاءَ تَشْبيهَ الشّقائِقِ فَلْيَقُلْ
كَنِسَاءِ قَتْلَى قَدْ خَرَجْنَ صَوائحا
If one would liken poppies to slain women's cries
Dressed in blood-drenched gowns, hideously arrayed
أُلْبِسْنَ أَثْوابَ الدِّماءِ شَنَاعَةً
ونَشَرْنَ شَعْراً ثُمَّ قُمْنَ نَوائحا
With hair let loose, they stand lamenting, wailing aloud
