يا زماناً ولى وأبقى بقلبي

نارَ وجدٍ شديدةَ البُرحاءِ

O time that has passed, yet remains in my heart

A blazing fire of intense longing

ما دعاني عهدٌ تقضى حميداً

فيكَ الا أجبتُهُ بالبكاءِ

No era has called me to fulfill it happily

Except I responded with weeping

فترى الدّمعَ فوق خديَ جارٍ

كانسكابِ السّيولِ غبَ الحياءِ

So you see the tears flowing down my cheek

Like pouring floods without shame

يا لياليَّ هل يعودنَّ عيشٌ

قد تقضّى في لذةٍ ورخاءِ

O nights will a life return

That was fulfilled in pleasure and comfort

في رُبى روضةٍ تحلّت ضياءً

فتجلّت في حِندِسِ الظّلماءِ

In the bosom of a meadow adorned with splendor

That shone in the darkness of obscurity

ضحكت أرضُهُ النضيرة زهواً

عن أقاحٍ على بكاءِ السّماءِ

Its fertile land laughed with pride

At the buds despite the weeping of the sky

تَنتحيني يدُ الحبيبةِ فيهِ

بكؤوسٍ مِن المُدامِ رُواءِ

The hand of my beloved caresses me there

With cups of mellow wine

مِن مُدامٍ ليست الى البُخل تُدلي

بانتسابٍ ولا الى الصَّهباء

A mellow wine that does not lean toward stinginess

Nor nobility or foolishness

أجتلي الشّمسَ من يدي بدرِ تمٍّ

رصّعوها بأنجُمِ الجوزاءِ

I reveal the sun from the full moon's hand

Studded with stars of Capricorn

ليس فيه مُحرّمٌ نتلقّى

حينَ تُبلى أعمالُنا بالخناءِ

Nothing forbidden do we receive

When our deeds are worn out with sorrow

لذةٌ شرطُها التجاوزُ في الحش

رِ اذا قامَ ربُّنا للجزاءِ

A pleasure whose condition is excess in love

When our Lord stands for recompense

فعليكَ السلامُ عهداً فقد كن

ت لقلبي أقصى المُنى والرجاء

Farewell, for you were

The utmost of wishes and hopes to my heart

وسقى البرقُ والرواعدُ قبراً

ضَمَّ من كان جامعَ السّراءِ

Lightning and thunder watered a grave

Containing the gatherer of joy
