1. صَبّحاني بوجههِ القَمريِّ

    وأصبحاني بالسلسبيلِ الرّويِّ

    He greeted me with his moonlike face

    And greeted me with his soft curly hair

  2. بدرُ ليلٍ يَسعى بشمسِ نهارٍ

    فشهيٌّ ينتابُنا بِشهيِّ

    A full moon of the night running after the sun of daytime

    So it was marvelous, the meeting of the moon and sun

  3. فاعجبا لاجتماعِ بدرٍ وشمسٍ

    في سماءَي سَنا كمالٍ سَنيِّ

    In my sky, perfecting its beauty

    The moon's brilliance was clad in brilliance

  4. مِن بهاهُ البدريِّ تكسى بهاءً

    والبهاءُ البدريُّ بالشّمسيِّ

    And the moon's brilliance with the sun's

    If her face gleamed golden

  5. ان تبدّت بوجهِها ذَهبياً

    قلتُ هذا مِن وجهِهِ الفِضيِّ

    I'd say it was from his golden complexion

    Or if her cheek showed rosy

  6. أو تراءت بخدِّها نَوفَرِيّاً

    قلتُ هذا مِن خَدّهِ الورديّ

    I'd say it was from his rosy cheek

    Never before did we see on his cheeks a rose

  7. ما رأينا مِن قبلِ خدِّيهِ ورداً

    يانعاً فوقَ عارضٍ سَوسَنيِّ

    Blooming over a lily-white cheek

    How can the tender violet be plucked from it

  8. كيف يُجنى البنفسجُ الغضُّ منه

    وهو يُحمى بالنّاظِر النّرجسيِّ

    While it's protected by the narcissus-like glance?

    Oh passion for glory made you deafen my heart

  9. يا ولوعاً بالنَّبلِ أصميتَ قلبي

    بسهامٍ من لحظِكَ البابليِّ

    With arrows from your Babylon-like glance

    You shot from your frowning eyebrows some arrows

  10. رَشَقتها مِن حاجبيكَ قِسيّ

    مُنتضاةٌ أحسن بها مِن قِسيِّ

    More beautiful than actual arrows

    So my heart is between an ardent arrow and a plucked rose

  11. ففؤادي باللَّحظِ والخدِّ منه

    بينَ سهمٍ جانٍ ووردٍ جنيِّ

    Like my life, intense with comfort

    Oh graceful one, I'd sacrifice the graceful one

  12. فهو ميتٌ بذا وحيٌّ بهذا

    مِثلُ عيشي شديدهُ بالرَّخيِّ

    Who bends like the withering samhar plant

    Give it to me moderately with a cold twist

  13. يا رشيقاً فديتُه مِن رشيقٍ

    يَتثنى كالذابلِ السّمهريِّ

    Of your refreshing, cool waist

    Give it to me in the joy of the wine-cup which makes clear

  14. عاطني صِرفها بصرفٍ برُودٍ

    خَصِرٍ من رُضابكَ البَرديِّ

    Between a merry and a happy vine branch

    Rise, for the darkness' gloom has spread

  15. عاطنيها في بهجة الكأسِ تُجلى

    بينَ عودٍ شادٍ وعودٍ شديِّ

    Under which is the glowing ember's red heat

    The dawn's spear pierced the night's liver

  16. قم فها فحمةُ الظّلامِ استطارت

    تحتها جمرةُ الضِّياءِ الضّويِّ

    Like the Kamees tribe's spear's stab to the Kamees' liver

    It appears, polished in gentle dripping

  17. حَربةُ الفجرِ أنفذت مَنحرَ اللّي

    لِ كطعنِ الكميِّ نحرَ الكميِّ

    Radiant from its pure spring

    So blackness upon redness and whiteness

  18. تَتراءى مصقولةً في رشاشٍ

    مُشرقٍ من نجيعهِ المَشرفيِّ

    Like the embroidered, adorned fabric

    Or as if the stream were wrapped in tar

  19. فاسودادٌ فوقَ ابيضاضِ احمرارٍ

    كالنّسيجِ المُشّهرِ الخَسروي

    Dripping from its clear spring

    And the trees' singing in the morning clarity

  20. أو كأنَّ الجاديَّ غُلِفَ بالكا

    فورِ مِن تحتِ ندِّهِ العَنبريِّ

    Chanting with their temple-like melody

    Whenever the breeze makes a trill

  21. وقيانُ الأشجارِ في وَضحِ الأس

    حارِ تشدُو بلحنِها المَعبدِيِّ

    The leaves flutter from the branches' shaking

    With tweets that mute the son of Sareeh

  22. كلّما طرّبَ الهزارُ هديلاً

    حنّتِ الورقُ مِن شجاهُ الشّجيِّ

    And singing that sings instead of the son of Ghanee

    Arabized in their tune about passion

  23. بتغاريدَ تُخرِسُ ابنَ سُريحٍ

    وغناءٍ يُغني عن ابنِ غنيِّ

    Westernized in its foreign melody

    In a meter beyond numerating

  24. مُعرباتٌ بلحنِها عن غرامٍ

    مُغرباتٌ في لحنهِ الأعجميِّ

    Neither set nor open nor twisted

    Give it to me, for the blossoms of spikenard

  25. بحسابٍ لا بالدَّساتينِ تُحصى

    لا ولا مُطلقٍ ولا ملويِّ

    Have appeared in the radiance of its dawn

    So the gardens' mouths smile good news

  26. واسقنيها فقد بدا زَهرُ النّو

    رِ على نُورِ صُبحِها الأزهريِّ

    For the crying of the lovesick and the tattooed

    And the tongue of Spring praises it

  27. فثغورُ الرّياضِ تضحكُ بِشراً

    لبكاءِ الوليِّ والوَسميِّ

    In the phraseology known to al-Mandali

    Whenever the winds walk

  28. ولسانُ الرّبيعِ يُثني عليه

    بعبارتِ عرفهِ المَندليِّ

    Between a bloomer from its plants and flowers

    Walking between fresh and tender

  29. كلّما راحت الرِّياحُ تَمشّى

    بينَ زاهٍ من نبتهِ وزهيِّ

    Witty mint and wise basil

    Give it to me as if it were the glow of the sun

  30. تَتمشّى ما بينَ تِبرٍ ونَدٍّ

    مِن عرارٍ ذاكٍ وَرندٍ ذكيِّ

    Appearing from its Aries burj

    For in its cup it is like fire and water

  31. عاطنيها كأنّها وَهجُ الشّم

    سِ تبدّت مِن بُرجِها الحَمليِّ

    Tied down by the power of strong hands

    The melting fire dissolved in frozen water

  32. فهي في كأسِها كنارٍ وماءٍ

    قُيّدا باقتدارِ أيدٍ قَوِيِّ

    So marvel at the solid melting

    Gold dissolved in a clay jug

  33. ذائبُ النارِ حلَّ في جامدِ ال

    ماءِ فاعجب بالذّائبِ الجَمديِّ

    And took on the essence of pearls

    Oh felled by wine-cups, take it as a first drink

  34. ذهبٌ حلَّ في اناءِ لُجينٍ

    فتحلّى باللؤلؤِ الحَببيِّ

    To take away cares with the golden drink

    When it flowed in the body it only flowed

  35. يا صريعَ الكاساتِ خُذها سُلافاً

    تُذهبِ الهمَّ بالسّنا الذّهَبيِّ

    With healing from every chronic illness

    But the respite of youth is splendor

  36. ما تمشّت في الجسمِ الا تمشّت

    بشفاءٍ مِن كلِّ داءٍ دويِّ

    So enjoy it by plundering of a happy life

    It's as if youth has quickly passed

  37. انّما مهلةُ الشّبابِ بهاءٌ

    فاغتنمها بنهبِ عيشٍ هَنيِّ

    And old age came with its decrepit prohibition

    And after that expect forbearance

  38. فكأن قد مَضى الشّبابُ نهيّاً

    وأتى الشّيبُ بالنُّهى الهَرميِّ

    Taken from the Forbearing Most High

  39. وتوقّع مِن بعدِ ذلكَ حِلماً

    مُستمدّاً مِن الحليمِ العليِّ
