يا من تصدَّرَ في القصور

وسطا على الأسدِ الهصورِ

O you who presides in palaces

Amidst the roaring lion

وَرقا السّريرَ متُوَّجاً

فَزها بهِ رأسُ السَّريرِ

Whose throne is spread with silk

Crowned by the head of the couch

وأطاعهُ الفَلكُ الأثي

رُ فعزَّ بالفَلكِ الأثيرِ

Obeyed by the obedient heavens

Exalted by the exalted heavens

ووفَت له أيامُهُ

والغَدرُ من شِيمِ الدهورِ

His days fulfilled for him

Though betrayal is the trait of times

فغدا بأثوابِ الهنا

ءِ وراحَ في خِلَعِ السرورِ

He rose in garments of bliss

Strolling in robes of joy

تُلهيهِ كأس مُدامةٍ

صفراءَ كالشِّعري العَبُّورِ

A yellow goblet of wine distracts him

Pale as the fleet ostrich

في مجلسٍ لذَّاتُهُ

تَنبثُّ مِن كفِّ المُديرِ

In a gathering of his pleasures

Flowing from the hand of the cupbearer

يَشدوه شاديهِ به

بمهذَّبِ الصّوتِ الجَهيرِ

His singer enchants him

With refined, sonorous voice

فَتُجيبُهُ عِيدانُه

عن ناطِقَي بُمٍّ وزيرِ

His pipes answer him

On behalf of the mute and eloquent

وله الجواري كالشُّمو

سِ مُخدَّراتِ في القصورِ

He has maidens like suns

Languorous in damask robes and silken clothes

يَرفُلنَ في حُللِ الدِّمق

سِ وفي أَفانينِ الحريرِ

Looking through a lattice

With glance of fawn’s black eye

ينظُرنَ مِن خَللِ السُّتو

رِ بمقلةِ الرَّشأِ الغريرِ

Adorned with jewelry, redolent with perfume

Let not the false glitter deceive you

مُتَزيِّناتٍ بالحُليِّ مضُمَّخاتٍ بالعَبيرِ

لا تَخدعَنكَ التُّرَّها

Of a life that is all sham

But heed the warning words

تُ بذاهب للعيشِ زُورِ

واسمع كلاماً واعظاً

Of a wise and experienced man

This world is no home

مِن قولِ بحَّاثً خبيرِ

ما هذه الدنيا بدا

For the refined and discerning

Be not deluded by its vainglory

رٍ للمُهذَّبِ والبصيرِ

لا تَغتَرِر بِغرُورها

You are in the land of vainglory

And beware its snares when

فلأنتَ في دارِ الغُرورِ

واحذر حبائِلها اذا

It makes foul actions seem fair

Devise for yourself a strategy

ما ازيَّنت فِعلَ الحَذُورِ

واعمل لنفسكَ حِيلةً

Before the onslaught of fate

As though in a little while

من قبلِ نازلةِ القَتيرِ

فكأنَّهُ عمّا قلي

There appeared, like a warner,

To one reveling in the night of passion

لٍ قد تراءى كالنَّذيرُ

يبدو لذي ليل الشعو

As clear as the shining dawn

Laughing yet with streaming eyes

رُ كواضح الصُّبحُ المُنيرِ

متضاحكاً يبكي العيو

Weeping copious tears

And know that gray hair

نَ بوابلِ الدَّمعِ الغزيرِ

واعلم بأنَّ الشيبَ ين

Undoubtedly heralds doom

And death is certain

ذر لا محالةَ بالمصيرِ

والموتُ حتمٌ لازمٌ

At the decree of the Almighty Ordainer

Sacred is the command

بيمينِ مختارٍ قديرِ

قدسيَّةُ المأمورِ في

When the Prince holds sway

It is truly the path

هِ اذا تحكَّمَ بالأميرِ

وهو الطريقُ حقيقةً

To Paradise or Hellfire

So act and roll up your sleeve

نحوَ الجِنانِ أو السّعيرِ

فاعمل وشَمِّر للذي

For what you hope on Resurrection Day

He brought you time and high expectation

ترجوهُ في يومِ النشورِ

آتاكَ والأملَ الطوي

While you were young

And cease from minor sins

لَ وأنتَ في العُمرِ القصيرِ

واقلع عن الذَّنبِ الصغي

Just as you refrained from major

And turn to your Gracious Lord

رِ كما انتهيتَ عن الكبيرِ

وارجع الى ربِّ كري

Before the agony of breasts

Remember His primeval favors

مٍ قبلَ حشرجةِ الصُّدورِ

واذكر أياديهِ الأُولى

They are necklaces in treasuries

For if you blame His work

هُنَّ القلائدُ في النُّخُورِ

فلئن ذممتَ صنيعهُ

You are not a grateful servant

Beware procrastination

ما أنتَ بالعبدِ الشَّكورِ

ايّاكَ تَمطُلُ بالمتا

For it is the gate of corruption

Repenting on the Frowning Day

بِ فإنَّهُ بابُ الفجورِ

لا ينفعُ الإقلاعُ في ال

Of stormy gloom will not avail

O One in His dominion

يومِ العبوسِ القَمطريرِ

يا واحداً في ملكهِ

Independent of partners

Exalted above any peer

فهو الغنيُّ عن السَّميرِ

وهو المنزَّهُ عن شري

I came to You when

It was time to be on my way

كٍ والمقدَّسُ عن نظيرِ

انِّي أتيتُكَ بعدما

For what I sent forth ignorantly

Of how matters would turn out

آنَ الزِّماعُ على المسيرِ

في أسرِ ما قدَّمتُهُ

So favor this wretched captive

And be generous to this destitute freeman

جهلاً بعاقبةِ الأُمورِ

فامنُن على العاني الأسي

Overlook his sin

For clemency befits the Almighty

رِ وجُد على العافي الفقيرِ

واحلُم له عن ذنبهِ

And have mercy on him for his wrong

For mercy is most becoming of the Powerful

فالحِلمُ أجدرُ بالقديرِ
