نعم قبضت روح العلا والفضائل
بموت جمال الدين صدر الأفاضل
Yes, the death of Jamal al-Din took away the sublime virtues,
The passing of the chief of nobles was a great loss.
تعطل من عبد الرحيم مكانه
وغيب عنه فاضل أي فاضل
None can take Abd al-Rahim's place,
No noble one is left like him.
أحقاً وجوه الفقه زال جمالها
وحطت أعالي هضبها للأسافل
The faces of jurisprudence lost their beauty,
Their lofty peaks lowered to the ground.
لقد هاب طرق المذهب اليوم سالك
ولو كان يحمي بالقنا والقنابل
Today, the path of this school of thought is deserted by its travelers,
Even if protected by spears and shields.
لقد حل في ذا العام فقدان عالم
يقول فلا يلفى له غير قائل
This year witnessed the loss of a scholar,
Whose words none can match.
قفوا خبرونا من يقوم مقامه
ومن ذا يرد الآن لهفة سائل
Tell us, who can take his place?
Who now can satisfy a seeker?
قفوا خبرونا من يوقف ظالماً
ويجزي في ميدان كل مناضل
Tell us, who can stop an oppressor,
And reward every competitor in the arena?
قفوا خبرونا هل له من مشابه
قفوا خبرونا هل له من مماثل
Tell us, is there anyone similar to him?
Tell us, is there anyone comparable?
فأعظم بحبر كان للعلم ساعياً
بعزم صحيح ليس بالمتكاسل
He strove tirelessly in the ocean of knowledge,
With steadfast determination, not lazily.
وأعظم به يوم الجدال مناظراً
إذا قال لم يترك مقالاً لقائل
He excelled in debate with eloquent speech,
Leaving no argument for any speaker.
وأسيافه في البحث قاطعة الظبا
بجوهرها لم يفتقر للصياقل
His swords in discourse cut through perplexity
With their essence, needing no sharpening.
يقوم بإنضاج المسائل مرشداً
لمستفهم أو طالب أو مسائل
He guided the confused, the student, the inquirer,
Maturing issues with wisdom.
ويجميع أشتات الفوائد جاهداً
ويسعى بجد نحوها غير هازل
He gathered scattered benefits with struggle,
Pursuing them seriously, not jesting.
طوى الموت حقاً شافعي زمانه
فمن بعده للأم وجد الثواكل
Death folded the Shafi'i jurist of the times,
After him, who can find a replacement?
ومذ رأته خير نجل لبره
بها أرضعته من ثدي الحوافل
Since she saw him as the best son of virtue,
She nurtured him at her bountiful breast.
أبان الخفايا شارحاً ببيانه
منزهة في الوصف عن سحر بابل
He clarified the unseen with his explanations,
Safe from Babylon's sorcery in his descriptions.
له قدم في الفقه سابقة الخطا
يقصر عنها كل حاف وناعل
His footing in jurisprudence was pioneering,
Beyond what any barefoot or slippered being can attain.
تبارك من أعطاه فيه مراتباً
يقر له بالفضل كل مجادل
Blessed is He who granted him such rank,
To which any disputant would admit his virtue.
فكم كان يبدي فيه كل غريبة
ويظهر من أبكاره بالعقائل
How much that was novel did he reveal!
And manifest unique legal points!
وكم بات يحيى فيه ليلاً كأنما
يصيد دراري زهره بالحبائل
How many nights he spent as if to catch
Rare blossoms in his nets!
فأفلامه قيد الأوابد لم تزل
يقيد منها كل صعب التناول
His prolific writings have bound the devout,
He compiled from them whatever is hard to obtain.
مثقفة ألفاظه حلوة الجنى
فما هز في الحالين غير عوامل
His eloquent words are sweetly seasoned,
He did not deviate in the two states beyond what destiny dictated.
مضى فمضى فقه كثير إلى الثرى
وهالت عليه الترب راحة هائل
Much jurisprudence has passed away into the soil,
And tremendous amounts of dust settled upon it.
تنكرت الدنيا ولكن تعرفت
بطيب الثنا عن فضله المتكامل
The world is unrecognizable, but it is known
By the fragrance of his perfected virtues.
وما شقت الأفلام إلا تعسفا
لفقدانها بالرغم خير أنامل
The pages were only torn unwillingly
Due to the loss of the best fingers.
وكم لبست ثوب الحداد محابر
لحبر غدا في سندسٍ أي رافل
How many schools put on the clothes of mourning,
For the ink that flowed into a silken grave!
لقد كان للأصحاب منه بلا مرا
جمال فدع قول الغبي المجامل
He was unmatched in his care for the companions.
Leave off the words of the foolish sycophant.
حوى من مواريث النبوة إرثه
وحاز حقيقاً سهمه غير عائل
His inheritance included the Prophet’s heritage,
And he truly gained his share, not deficient.
هو النجم إلا أنه البدر كاملا
على أنه شمس الضحى في التعادل
He is the star, but a perfect full moon,
Though he is the morning sun in fairness.
وبلدته إسنا محلا ومحتداً
ومنزله في الخلد أسنى المنازل
His hometown of Isnā gained distinction,
And his home in eternity is the loftiest abode.
إذا ما أفاد النقل فهو ختامه
فلا تسمعن من بعد نقل ناقل
If the transmitted reports are sealed,
Then do not listen to any transmitter after him.
صدوق لدى عزو النقول محقق
وحاشاه من تلك النقول البواطل
He was truthful in tracing reports, a verifier,
Far above those vain reports.
وسحبان نطق في الدروس فصاحة
فدع من له في درسه عيّ باقل
His eloquent lectures were so clear -
Leave those whose lectures contain flaws.
يؤدي من الأشغال بالعلم للورى
فروضاً ويفتي مقدماً بالنوافل
He performed knowledge’s duties to humanity,
And issued judgments with optional acts of worship.
وينهر نص الشافعي ولم يزل
يناضل عنه كل خصم مناضل
He taught the texts of al-Shafi’i,
And defended him against every opponent.
حوى العلم والعلياء والجود والتقى
وحاز بسبق فضل هذى الخصائل
His knowledge contained the scholars, generosity, piety,
And excelling in these traits came naturally to him.
هو النجم من أفق المعارف قد هوى
فعاد دجى ضوء البدور الكوامل
He was the star from the horizon of knowledge who fell,
Returning the full moons to darkness.
هو الجبل الراسي تصدع ركنه
فللأرض ميد بعده بالزلازل
He was the solid mountain whose pillar cracked,
Causing the earth to quake with tremors.
فمن ذا تطيب النفس يوماً بقوله
إذا هو أفتى في عويص المسائل
Who feels at ease hearing his words,
When he issues legal rulings on complex issues?
لئن مهد التمهيد مضجعه له
فكوكبه من بعده غير آفل
Though death has laid him to rest,
His star after him does not set.
فيا عالماً قد أذكر الناس آخراً
مزايا أولي العلم الكرام الأوائل
O scholar, you taught people the virtues of early pious scholars,
Fulfilling the important tasks, O best sponsor.
كفيت الورى أمر المهمات ناهضاً
بأعبائها يا خير كاف وكافل
You taught the world until wisdom was refined,
Not distracted from its affairs by trifles.
وأعلمت فيها الدهر حتى تنقحت
ولم تشتغل عن أمرها بالشواغل
You brought out hidden gems for humanity,
For you are an ocean with no shallows.
وأبرزت مكنون الجواهر للورى
لأنك بحر ماله من مساحل
You clarified the ambiguous for people in elucidation,
None sees flaws in its beauty.
وأوضحت في الإيضاح للخلق مشكلا
فليس يرى في حسنه من مشاكل
If you gathered the scholars in councils,
Your lofty riddles would be the assemblies’ crown.
وإن جمعت أهل العلوم محافل
فألغازك العليا طراز المحافل
Your legal differences, O brilliant synthesizer,
Baffle the minds of similar men.
فروقك يا من كان للعم جامعاً
تحير أذهان الرجال الأماثل
Your writings with guidance clear as proof,
Make other gardens seem barren.
تصانيف لا تخفي محاسنها التي
هدايتها تهدي الورى بالدلائل
Recited, they spare one hearing nightingales,
Understood, they guide the lost wandering in ignorance.
وتبدو فتغني عن رياض أنيقة
وتتلى فتغني عن سماع البلابل
They purely seek right, guiding the perplexed,
Saving them from floundering in desolate places.
تمحض منها القصد فيها فأرشدت
حيارى ثووا من جهلهم في مجاهل
You set aside a portion in legal theory,
Making other swords remote and blades weak.
توفرت سهماً في الأصول لأجله
غدا السيف نائى الحد واهي الحمائل
By your life, syntax appeared in mourning
For your death, wailing in grief.
لعمرك إن النحو يا زيد قد بدا
لموتك في حال من الحزن حائل
If the expert of this art attacked you,
He would seek syntax while walking barefoot.
فلو فارسي الفن غامرك اغتدي
لنحوك يسعى وهو في زي راجل
We lost a sheikh whose abundant knowledge
Fortified high principles after him.
عدمناك شيخاً كم جلا من علومه
عقائل صينت بعده في معاقل
In the art of al-Khalil ibn Ahmad,
He brought novel words with powerful examples.
وكم جاء في فن الخليل بن أحمد
بأحمد أقوال أتت بالفواصل
If he gained the means to heaven through knowledge,
His pegs are eternal in glory.
لئن نال أسباب السماء بعلمه
فأوتاده في المجد غير مزايل
With copious tears and grief we mourned
The vast ocean of generosity and perfection.
وأدمعنا بحر مديد وحزننا
طويل لبحر وافر الجود كامل
He was a father to students, showing them
A cascade of virtue connected to merit.
وكان أبا للطالبين يريهم
فواضله مقرونة بالفضائل
Sincerely advising seekers of knowledge,
He spared no effort in teaching the ignorant.
نصيحاً لطلاب العلوم جميعهم
فلم يأل جهداً عند تعليم جاهل
He composed books clarifying Ibn Idris’ knowledge,
With texts conveying the fruits of the finest carrier.
يحرر في علم ابن إدريس للورى
دروساً تولى جملها خير حامل
He guided students through his abridgement,
Seeing in them one perfection after another.
ويرشد بالتهذيب طلاب علمه
فينظر منهم كاملاً بعد كامل
He did not suspect any but the envious of ingratitude,
Or doubt any but the gluttonous of plagiarism.
ولا يرتئي في شكره غير حاسد
ولا يمتري في علمه غير ناكل
Openly he gave generously of every merit,
And strove quietly to hide them from the virtuous.
يجود بأنواع الفضائل جهرة
ويجهد في إخفائها للفواضل
He is the ocean of knowledge, truly the ocean of dew,
The two seas overflowed from him fully.
هو البحر علماً بل هو البحر في ندى
لقد مرج البحرين منه لآمل
If Ibn Rafa’ lived in his time,
His syntax would have folded the desert paths.
وإن ابن رفعة لو تقدم عصره
طوى نحوه البيداء سير المحامل
If al-Qaffāl witnessed his lectures one day,
He would never have turned away from protecting them.
ولو شاهد القفال يوماً دروسه
لما كان يوماً عن حماه بقافل
Every sincere person intones his praises,
Enchanting the hearing of the dreamy listener.
ترنم في أمداحه كل صادق
فأطرب في إنشادها سمع ذاهل
With my tears and words I will weep for him,
For the two seas of knowledge and noble rain.
سأبكيه بالدرين دمع ومنطق
لبحرين من علم وبر حواصل
He abandoned craving for positions,
Just as the doe abandons the howl of the wild dog.
لقد هجرت صاد المناصب نفسه
كما هجرت راء الهجا نفس واصل
He shunned them as they did not tempt him
With their deceptive illusion and flattery.
تنزه عنها وهي لا تستفزه
بزخرفها الخداع خدع المجامل
He never cast an eye toward them though they flirted
With the coquetry of a maiden in finery.
وما مد عيناً نحوها إذ تبرجت
تبرج حسناء الحلى في الغلائل
You always met him welcoming and giving good news,
For you only saw him with noble traits.
ويلقاك بالترحيب والبشر دائماً
فلم تره إلا كريم الشمائل
From him, manners describing his visitor flowed,
As cool drink flows purely for the healthy.
صفت منه أخلاق لقاصده كما
صفا منه للعافين شرب المناهل
I console the prayer niches without their imam,
Though he followed the greatest imams.
أعزى محاريب العلا بإمامها
وإن كان مأموماً بأعظم نازل
I console the jurisprudence classes after him,
For succeeding him makes all listless.
أعزى دروس الفقه بعد دروسها
لتصديرهم من بعده كل خامل
Say to the envious who cannot match him -
Shame will expose you among the learned circles.
فقل لحسود لا يسد مكانه
سيفضحك التخجيل بين المحافل
The authority of Abd al-Rahim was true,
And his enemies struggled against it in vain.
بحق حوى عبد الرحيم سيادة
وأعداؤها كم حاولوها بباطل
A folk reached high trying to take his place,
But attained nothing of what they wished.
تطاول قوم كي يحلوا محله
فما ظفروا مما تمنوا بطائل
How can the short hand reach for a star,
And how can dust attain what is beyond its grasp?
أتمتد نحو النجم راحة قاصر
وأين الثريا من يد المتناول
Whoever desires his lofty recitation rank
Is not reasonable in people’s eyes.
ومن رام في الإقراء عالي شأنه
فذلك عند الناس ليس بعاقل
God placed Jamāl al-Din in eternity
To enjoy His complete forgiveness.
أحل جمال الدين في الخلد ربه
ليحظى بعفو منه شافٍ وشامل
His Merciful Lord received him in mercy
With cascades following cascades.
ورواه مولاه الرحيم برحمة
يحييه منها هاطل بعد هاطل
The pleasure of Paradise met him quickly,
Heralding abundant and immediate pleasure.
ووافاه رضوان الجنان مبادراً
بشيراً برضوان سريع معاجل
The God of the wilderness revived him with joy,
Spirit, and satisfaction in the brilliance of morning and night.
وحياه بالريحان والروح والرضا
إله البرايا في الضحى والأصائل
He was sincere in deeds and knowledge,
Not wasting the efforts of a worker.
لقد كان في الأعمال والعلم مخلصاً
لمن لم يضيع في غد سعى عامل
My praises of him transform into elegies
Weeping with tears welling up.
فلهفي لأمداح عليه تحولت
مراثي تبكي بالدموع الهوامل
Their ardent passions assist me in lamenting,
Most of them from my agony without restraint.
يساعدني في الحمام بشجوها
وأغلبها من لوعتي بالبلابل
I exhausted my treasuries of patience and tears,
Emptying both these vessels.
صرفت عليه كنز صبري وأدمعي
فأفنيت من هذا وهذا حواصلي
I will recite verses at his grave,
And make the deaf stones hear my dictation.
سأنشد قبراً حل فيه رثاءه
وأسمع ما أمليه صم الجنادل
We are but a caravan of death heading to decay,
Our days make us march like camels.
وما نحن إلا ركب موت إلى البلى
تسيرنا أيامنا كالرواحل
We traveled stages toward the graves,
With only a few stages left.
قطعنا إلى نحو القبور مراحلاً
وما بقيت إلا أقل المراحل
This is the way of all people,
Each a traveler after another traveler.
وهذا سبيل العالمين جميعهم
فما الناس إلا راحل بعد راحل
