لقد صرفنا العمر في قيل وقال

يا نديمي قم فقد ضاق المجال

We have squandered our lives in idle talk and hearsay,

O my companion, rise, for the scope of time has narrowed,

واسقني تلك المدام السلسبيل

انّها تهدي إلى خير السبيل

And pour me a draught of that wine, soft as the Salsabil fountain,

For truly, it guides one toward the most excellent Way.

واخلع الغلّ بها يا ذا النديم

أنّها نار اضاءت للكليم

Cast off the shackles of self with it, O companion mine,

For it is the very Fire that illuminated the mount for Moses.

هاتها صهباء من خمر الجنان

دع كئوساً واسقنيها بالدنان

Bring it forth, a golden vintage from the wines of Paradise,

Leave aside the cups and pour it for me straight from the cask.

ضاق وقت العمر عن آلاتها

هاتها من غير عصرهاتها

The span of life is too short for the rituals of serving,

Bring it forth at once, without the delay of the press.

قم أزل عنّي بها رسم الهموم

انّ عمري ضاع في علم الرسوم

Rise, and through it, banish the traces of my sorrow,

For my life has been wasted in the science of empty forms.

أيّها القوم الذي في المدرسة

كلما حصلّتموه وسوسة

O you assembly of scholars dwelling within the school,

All that you have gathered is but a whispering delusion.

فكركم إن كان فى غير الحبيب

ما لكم في النشأة الاُخرى نصيب

If your thoughts dwell on anything other than the Beloved,

Then you hold no portion in the genesis of the life to come.

فاغسلوا يا قوم عن لوح الفؤاد

كلّ علم ليس ينجي في المعاد

So wash away, O people, from the tablet of the heart,

Every knowledge that does not grant salvation in the End.
