O Egypt, I quench you from a heavenly garden

Whose branches bear ripe, low-hanging fruit

Your soil is as soft as silk

And your water as clear as pure silver

Your breeze puts musk to shame

And your blossoms make the precious look cheap

So intricate are the qualities you encompass

None can compare to your beauty

Since travelers arrived in your land

I've forgotten my friends and loved ones

    O God protect this garden

    Whose delight suffices and heals

In it is the heart's remedy, its birds

    Warbling melodiously like a harp

Whoever wishes to live happy and content

    In prosperous and satisfying life

Let him leave knowledge and its people

    And let ignorance cover him

    Put aside medicine, logic

And grammar, exegesis in a corner

    Leave study and teaching

    And text, commentary, footnote

O life, how long will you torment me

    With your miserable days?

Grant me hopes, I implore you

And do not dash my aspirations

If you think me one of them

    Yours is a feeble assumption

Stop torturing me, or I shall complain

    To He of highest glory
