1. My two companions, as for these—these are their dwellings;

    and as for my passion, it is what you both behold.

  2. My two companions, I see no one for me but you two;

    so what do you bid me, O two men?

  3. My two companions, this is a place where weeping knows no bounds;

    so what, then, are your tears waiting for?

  4. And if you will not help me bear my sorrow,

    then stop, bid me farewell awhile, and leave me alone.

  5. For I shall stand here at the beloved’s dwelling,

    though its traces wear my heart away and fill me with grief.

  6. If all the sorrow I endure were but a single sorrow,

    I would shed a single flood of tears, and that would suffice me.

  7. But many sorrows have assailed me,

    and I have no strength to cope with so many.

  8. Alas for my heart! In love I obeyed it;

    why, then, do I find it disobeying me when I would forget?

  9. Indeed, my heart and I are as someone once said:

    “Your companion is a Qaysite, while you are a Yemenite.”
