مَماليكُ مَولانا الأَميرِ وَخَيلُهُ
كِلابٌ إِذا شاهَدتُهُم وَعِظامُ
Our lord the emir’s mamluks and his horses—
dogs and ostriches, whenever I behold them.
لَقَد ضاعَ فيهِم مالُهُ إِذ شَراهُمُ
وَليسَ عَجيباً أَن يَضيعَ حَرامُ
His wealth did indeed go to waste on them when he bought them;
nor is it strange for ill-gotten wealth to go to waste.
