أَيُّها الغافِلُ الَّذي لَيسَ يُجدي

كَثرَةُ اللَومِ فيهِ وَالتَوبيخِ

O heedless one, for whom blame

And admonishment are futile,

إِنَّها غَفلَةٌ لَكَ الوَيلُ مِنها

ما رَواها الرُواةُ في تاريخِ

Beware this heedlessness, for it shall be

Your ruin, as the historians relate in chronicles,

وَكَما قيلَ هَب بِأَنَّكَ أَعمى

كَيفَ تَخفى رَوائِحُ البَطّيخِ

And it has been said: pretend that you are blind,

How could you miss the scent of melons?
