لِحاظُهُ تُطْمِعُ فِي نَيْلِهِ
وَتِيهُهُ يُؤْيِسُ مِنْ وَصْلِهِ
His glances inspire hope of winning him,
Yet his haughtiness makes one despair of union with him.
أَفْدِي الَّذِي أَسْرَفَ فِي جُودِهِ
فَأَيَسَ الْعاشِقَ مِنْ عَذْلِهِ
I would ransom him who was lavish in his generosity,
And made the lover despair of reproaching him.
قُلْتُ لَهُ وَالْغَنْجُ كُحْلٌ لَهُ
وَالشَّكْلُ مَنْسُوبٌ إلى شَكْلِهِ
I said to him, with coquetry as his kohl,
And grace traced back to his grace:
تُنْكِرُ ظُلْمَ النَّاسِ عُشَّاقَهُمْ
وَأَنْتَ تَجْرِي بِي إلى مِثْلِهِ
You condemn people for wronging their lovers,
Yet you lead me toward the same.
