I have seen no land as long or as wide
As Baghdad, truly it's paradise on earth
Life in Baghdad is pure and fresh
Life elsewhere lacks purity and vigor
Lifespans stretch long since its food is wholesome
While some lands make men short-lived
Its Lord has decreed that no Caliph shall die there
What He wills for His creation comes to pass
A stranger's eye falls shut there, never to see
A stranger in Syria hoping to steal a glimpse
So if Baghdad's people reproach me for loving her
I've only repaid good deeds with good deeds
And if they spurn me and hurl abuse
I'm unfit for scorn or hatred anyway
