We saw you both, O two sons of Rabi‘a, fall
at war’s bite, though your host was great.
You proved al-Farazdaq’s words about you true,
and proved false what Jarir had said.
If you two do not check the horsemen with lances,
then take your place with the Nabataeans wherever they go.
Namir, in its insolence, imposes humiliation upon you both;
tales of them will range through upland and lowland.
Namir has gained from you more than its due,
so every man of Namir is thereby a prince.
If you boast of what remains from your ancient past,
cities and palaces, too, have been destroyed.
The enemy’s catapults battered them and brought down
cities among them, mountain-like, and walls.
Kings raised them—Kisra and Hormuz,
and the house of Heraclius—splendid for an age.
Though you revive the glory of old, there has never ceased
to be among you one blinded by the ravages of war.
You battered the lions of Syria until they warned one another
against your protected ground, until no wounded one would growl.
How then, on al-Sharif’s outskirts, can there strike you
foxes pawing through the pebbles—while I perish?
