1. عصر الشبيبة ناضِر غض

    فيه ينال اللين والخفض

    The morn of youth is bright and fresh,

    Wherein we gain softness and grace.

  2. مثلَ الشبيبة كالربيع إذا

    ما جيد فاخضرت له الأرض

    Like spring is youth when

    The earth grows green at its face.

  3. والشيب كالمخل الجماد له

    لونان مغبر ومبيض

    While age is like barren winter, of hue

    Dusty and pale without trace.

  4. بينا الفتى يختال كالغصن

    المولي أورق خوطه الغض

    The young man struts like a supple branch

    With tender green lines at his base.

  5. سمح الخطى يهتز في غيد

    ترنو إليه الأعين المرض

    Gentle of pace, he sways in his pride

    As all eyes on him gaze.

  6. سنحت له دهياء من كثب

    دانت خطاه وما به أبض

    Fortune has smiled on him, flirting,

    Bowing before him to erase

  7. ترك الجديد جديده سملا

    لا الصون يرجعه ولا الرحض

    Any troubles ahead. Neither thrift

    Nor comfort can make him retrace.

  8. حتى كأن على الخطوب له

    عيناً تجنب جفنها الغمض

    As if to misfortunes he has

    An eye that avoids their embrace.

  9. ولرب جرار يغص به

    طول الفضاء ويشرق العرض

    Many a jar he breaks, longing

    For width and light in this space.

  10. فتعاقب الفتيين يقدح في

    صم الصفا فيظل يرفض

    So the young take turns kindling

    In deaf ears with no cause.

  11. أوعظ بشيب قصر لابسه

    كرهان وشك الهلك أو حرض

    Or mentors with age address gently

    Fearing harm or vile acts.

  12. فسقى الإله شبيبة درست

    أقرضتها فاسترجع القرض

    So God nurtured a youth who learned

    And returned every loan at its place.

  13. وعذا فرسدس يعض به

    رحل ويشجي النسع والغرض

    And choked an old steed, ridding

    Burdens in anger to replace.

  14. أنضاه نص سرى وهاجرة

    حتى تسرى المني والنحض

    He fulfilled high pursuits, like Hagar

    Flowing freely without disgrace.

  15. وطوته أرض فانطوى بشوى

    نقض عليه شاحب نقض

    And the earth folded him in her abundance

    As a wan foe sought to debase.

  16. متسربل بالليل مدرع

    بالآل والرمضاء ترمض

    Cloaked by night, armed

    With weapons, he proceeds apace.

  17. ينفي سراه كراه عنه إذا

    ما استوسن النوامة البض

    Repelling harm, if

    Rest weighs heavy in its place.

  18. ويؤم بحراً منبني مطر

    لا النزر نائله ولا البرض

    And he sails an abundant sea

    With no lack or loss to deface.

  19. ترد العفاة عليه واثقة

    بالري حين يغصها الجرض

    The weak flock to him confident

    In rain when drought tightens its brace.

  20. وإذا السنون كحلن عن بلل

    وألح منها النهس والعض

    And when years gather like kohl

    Parching breath with no trace,

  21. وتأرثت للشعريين بها

    نار وعز القرض والفرض

    When the poets were left

    With only fire and debts to erase,

  22. ورأى المسيم الأرض خاشعة

    لا خلة نجمت ولا حمض

    And he saw the earth humbled

    With no star or rain to retrace,

  23. فهو الربيع لها المربع إذا

    ضن الربيع وأخلف الومض

    He is the spring, the square,

    When spring itself leaves no trace.

  24. وإذا الأمور دجت وضيق بها

    ذرع وخيف مزلها الدحض

    When matters darken and narrow

    Till patience itself loses its place,

  25. جلى دجنتها لناظره

    رأي له الأبرام والنقض

    He illuminates their gloom for the viewer.

    A vision that unravels and lays waste.

  26. رأي إذا ناجى الضمير به

    وحدين أبرز ضحكه المحض

    A vision that makes the conscience laugh

    When alone, with pure joy on its face.

  27. حتى كأن على الخطوب له

    عيناً تجنب جفنها الغمض

    Hearts dry for him, shaken

    From where peace once took its place.

  28. ولرب جرار يغص به

    طول الفضاء ويشرق العرض

    Like the night whose stars are years

    Flickering restlessly without base.

  29. تجف القلوب له ويشخصها

    عن مستقر قرارها أرض

    Destinies like sand dunes

    Crossing a land his winds race.

  30. كالليل أنجمه سناً وظبي

    تخفاقهن الهبر والوخض

    Souls hastened to him in the darkness

    Seeking color and form in his grace.

  31. ومعابل مسنونة ذرب

    يحدو بها شرع لنا نبض

    Like a wounded dove, you are feathers

    When calamity descends in this space.

  32. قدت الحتوف إليه في لجب

    لليم منه اللون والعرض

    Ungrateful for blessings, they insult

    Your gifts, resentful, lacking grace.

  33. كقدي جربان وريشة إذ

    حشر القضيض عليك والقض

    You bought yourself, sold yourself, rushing

    To pale beneath what you displace.

  34. لم يشكروا نعماك إذ غمطوا

    نعماك إذ سخطوا ولم يرضوا

    Like David's coat of many colors

    No woven seam can retrace.

  35. وشريت نفسك والقنا قصد

    والبيض تحت البيض مرفض

    The saddle atop the camel you carry

    Bent to shape by force and brace.

  36. وعليك داودية كأضا

    ة اللوب ما في سردها حبض

    Like beads fused and aligned

    Flawless, connected without trace.

  37. والسرج فوق أقب تحمله

    عوج بناه البسط والقبض

    Till you seem an epic poem

    Of fledglings who refuse their place.

  38. كسبيكة العقيان أدمجه

    محض وألحق إطله العض

    You sought guidance when it was scorned

    And disbelief was vile and debased.

  39. فكأنه فتخاء ملحمة

    فرخين طلت وهي ترفض

    Two halves to your day. One for dew,

    One for honor and one disgraced.

  40. حتى ثنى من بين منجدل

    أو هارب لم ينجه الركض

    The dew and valor surpassed your ancestors.

    Their years and they were laid to waste.

  41. عز الهدى بك بعد ذلته

    والكفر ذل فما به نغض

    Calm of hands, who recoil when asked,

    And mourn when forced to retrace.

  42. شطران يومك للندى بعض

    والمكرمات وللردى بعض

    As if wealth to them were stones,

    Loved and guarded from harms embrace.

  43. حزت الندى والبأس عن سلف

    سنوهما وعليهما حضوا

    A treasure of praise while it remains,

    Praised, untouched by evil or time's erasing.

  44. سبط الأنامل يجذلون إذا

    سئلوا ويغتمون إن عضوا

    I made them like you, gave them qualities so

    They remain though years continue replacing.

  45. فكأن حل المال عندهم

    حجر وحب مصونه بغض

    And when Rabi’ah boasts of its best

    And the wise are called to collate

  46. كنز المحامد وهي باقية

    محمودة لا العين والعرض

    Among us are Yazeed and Khalid. Our prey

    Humbled, by proofs we devastated.

  47. أشبهتهم وخلفتهم فهم

    باقون ما عمرت لم يمضوا

    And we hope in Khalid whose sway

    Across nations all accommodated.

  48. وإذا ربيعة قال فاخرها

    واستنبىء الحكماء كي يقضوا

    Delegations came to you, faces glowing

    But you neither bent nor prostrated.

  49. منا يزيد وخالد خنعت

    صيد القروم وأفحم العض

    I have a bond with you, of hope

    And sincere affection purely placed.

  50. ومؤملين بخالد شحطت

    بهم البلاد وعاقهم أبض

    My plea is my trust and your merit, so

    Noble deeds and untainted grace.

  51. وفدت عليهم من نداك لهى

    تترى فلم يحنوا ولم ينضوا

    You did not degrade me, nor use

    Intercessors that might debase.

  52. لي حرمة بكم تكنفها

    أمل وود صادق محض

    So I owe you gratitude, protection

    If you ruled the oceans, their bounds you'd displace

  53. وذريعتي ثقتي وفضلك إذ

    شرف الفعال وطهر العرض

    They bit their lips and hands,

    Envying you, and more they effaced.

  54. هنأتني براً ملكت به

    شكري وشكرك واجب فرض

    If curses from them were flames

    Under cauldrons, if only they graced.

  55. لم تبتذل وجهي ولاشفعت

    شفعاء لي في منها هض

    For in you lies my hopes' end.

    Generous, flowing, nothing effaced.

  56. ففداك مناعون لو ملكوا

    مدد البحار إذن لما بضوا

  57. عضوا شفاههم وأيديهم

    حسداً عليك وطالما عضوا

  58. ولووا معاطسهم على لهب

    تحت الكشوح وليتهم رضوا

  59. فهناك أنك منتهى أملي

    جاد وراج ما به نهض
