ألا أبلغا عني عقيلا رسالة

فأنك من حرب علي كريم

أما تذكر الأيام إذ أنت واحد

وإذ كل ذي قربى إليك ذميم

وإذ لا يقيك الناس شيئا تخافه

بأنفسهم إلا الذين تضيم

When people could not protect you from what you feared

Except those whom you wronged

أترقع وهي الأبعدين ولم يقم

لوهيك بين الأقربين أديم

Do you mend ties with those afar and forget

To mend ties with kin that have been broken for long?

فأما إذا عضت بك الحرب عضة

فأنك معطوف عليك رحيم

But if war has hurt you

I will be merciful and kind to you

وإما آنست أمناً ورخوة

فأنك للقربى ألد خصوم

And if you feel complacent and comfortable

You become the harshest opponent to kin
