ترحل فما بغداد دار إقامة

وما عند من أضحى ببغداد طائل

Depart, for Baghdad is no place for rest

And he who in Baghdad prospers has no cause

محل ملوك سمنهم في أديمهم

وكلهم عن حلية المجد عاطل

A seat of kings whose backs their garments deck

Yet all lack glory's jewel and its laws

فلا غرو إن شلت يد المجد والعُلى

وقد سماح من رجال ونائل

No wonder glory's hand is paralyzed

When men like these hold power and high place

إذا غضغض البحر الغطامط ماؤه

فليس عظيماً أن تغيض الجداول

If the sea's depths foam high upon the shore

Why marvel that the brooks are in disgrace?
