1. لا شيء يدفع حق خصم شاغب

    إلا كحلف عبيدة بن سميدع

    Nothing deters the rights of a contentious opponent

    Except the oath of Ubaydah ibn al-Samit

  2. يمضي الغموس على الغموس لجاجة

    عض الجموع على اللجام المقدع

    He insists on wrongdoing repeatedly out of stubbornness

    The crowds bite on the bridle angrily

  3. وإذا تسمع حلقة أصغى لها

    وإذا يخوف بالتقى لم يسمع

    And if you hear a circle, listen attentively to it

    And if he intimidates with piety, do not listen

  4. نزق اليمين إذا أردت يمينه

    بخدائع الشعراء غير مخدع

    Deny the oath if you want his oath

    With the deceptions of poets, not deceiving

  5. يهتز حين تمر حجة خصمه

    حذر الضيحة كاهتزاز الأشجع

    He trembles when the argument of his opponent passes

    Fearing exposure like the trembling of Al-Ashja'

  6. يخشى مضرته لنفع صديقه

    ما خير ذي حسب إذا لم ينفع

    He fears harming for the benefit of his friend

    What good is a man of nobility if he does not benefit?

  7. بذل الجلية ثم قال وقد مضت

    للعلقمي خذ الجلية أو دع

    Giving charity then saying when it was given

    Take the charity, Al-Alqami, or leave it
