1. A full moon veiled itself in cloud;

a slender bough rose high upon a dune.

  2. His charms summon hearts

through him to speak face-to-face with sin.

  3. The north wind toyed with his gait

and turned him toward the south.

  4. The east wind did to him

what it never does to a slender bough.

  5. The mounts of his beauty clung

to our minds when he vanished.

  6. And our cheeks lodged their grievance

against the hand of tears, through sobbing.

  7. As though our agitation were

the disorder in a suspect’s words.

  8. From his proud bearing he is bent

by hands of coyness, though no breeze blows.

  9. Thus it seems they and he,

when a discerning eye beholds them,

  10. are kisses of favor won by the

forsaken lover through union with the beloved.

  11. O Badr, by the full moon that

you raised from the firmament of necklines,

  12. and by the scorpion of the temple-lock that

you fashioned from beauty and fragrance—

  13. it grazes, though I never set it grazing,

on the fruits of hearts, without so much as creeping:

  14. grant me a visit to you in sleep,

that I may see you with no watcher near.
