1. أَرْضى صَبابَتَهُ فَلِمْ لَمْ تُرْضِهِ

    وقَضى بِها ومُرادَهُ لَمْ يَقْضِهِ

    He cured his youthful vigour, yet it brought him no contentment,

    And though he had his will of her, still was he not fulfilled.

  2. أَهْدى إِلَيْهِ الحبُّ عِلَّةَ طَرْفِهِ

    بالسُّقْمِ فاسْتَهْداهُ صِحَّةَ غُمْضِهِ

    The passion of his love had brought disease into his eyes,

    So when she made as if to heal them, blindness was their yield,

  3. وكأَنَّ حُمرةَ خَدِّهِ وعِذارِهِ

    وردٌ تعلَّقَ بعضُه في بَعضِهِ

    And as the crimson of his cheek with pallor vies in hue,

    The rose is intertwined with it inseparably.
