عَادَ وكَمْ قالَ لا أَعودُ
كأَنَّما وَعْدُهُ وَعِيدُ
He returned—though how often he had said, “I shall not return!”
As though his promise were a threat.
أَحسنُ ما نحنُ في وصالٍ
يَعْرِضُ ما بيننا الصُّدُودُ
Just when our union is at its sweetest,
Estrangement comes between us.
وكَمْ تَجَلَّدْتُ لا لِأَنِّي
عَلى عذابِ الهَوى جَليدُ
How often I have steeled myself—not because
I am hardened to love’s torment,
لكِنَّني طالِبٌ رِضاهُ
وهكذا تفعلُ العَبيدُ
But because I seek his favor;
And thus do slaves behave.
