1. وغادةٍ ترفلُ في الشبابِ

    عاريةِ الحسنِ من المعَابِ

    A coy beauty reveling in youth

    Her beauty free of flaws

  2. كاسيةٍ من ملح التصابي

    أَجفانُها َنشْوى بلا شرابِ

    Clad in the salt of wit

    Her eyes full of dew without drinking

  3. تَأْسِرُ بالأَلحاظِ أُسْدَ الغابِ

    مربوبةٍ تُرْبي عَلَى الأَربابِ

    She captivates lions of the forest with her glances

    A seductress nurturing her lovers

  4. تُحْسِنُ أَنْ تلعبَ بالأَلبابِ

    جانبتُها في تَركها اجتنابي

    Knowing well how to play with minds

    I shunned her for avoiding my reproach

  5. إِذ مُدَّتي تَقْصُرُ عن عتابي

    فَأُذْهِبَتْ بمذهب الخطابِ

    Since my resolve falls short of blaming her

    So she turned away scowling

  6. مغضض اللحظِ من الجوابِ

    أَجلسني في العيِّ كالخطَّابي

    Her gaze full of disapproval

    She made me sit confused like a fool

  7. وذاك عُنوانٌ عَلَى كِتابِ

    داخلهُ صِفرٌ من الآدابِ

    That being the mark of a letter

    Its inside blank of manners

  8. كأَنَّهُ قُفلٌ عَلَى خَرابِ

    مفتاحه أَير أَبي تُرابِ

    As if it's a lock upon ruins

    Its key lost in dust

  9. يا مُفرداً بمادحٍ كذَّابِ

    وصادقاً في هجوه مغتابي

    O you who are uniquely wondrous without conceit

    I have exceeded in satirizing and reproaching you

  10. مُطريك إِن أَطراك للثوابِ

    كَطائِرٍ أَرسل في ضَبابِ

    I would reward you if I could for forbearance

    Like a bird sent into the fog

  11. جاوزتَ في الوصف مدى الإِطنابِ

    قليلَ أَنسابكَ في الأَحسابِ

    You have exceeded the bounds of verbosity in description

    Too few are your ancestries in counting

  12. كَذِكْرِكَ المظلم في الكتابِ

    يا واحِد العُجْب بلا إعجابِ

    Like your obscure mention in the book

    O peerless in wonder without admiration

  13. بالَغَ في هجوك واغتيابي

    سَمَّاك إنساناً بلا استيجابِ

    I have been excessive in satirizing and faulting you

    Naming you a man without justification

  14. دونكها مظلمةَ الجلباب

    غريبةَ الإغراب والإِعرابِ

    Below which lies the gloomy dress

    Strange in eloquence and grammar

  15. أوْقَعَ من مواقِعِ الضِّرابِ

    تبيتُ حَدْوَ الرَّكْبِ والركابِ

    It has fallen from the positions of rhythm

    Spending the night at the edge of the riding party and riders

  16. زينتها حقائب الأحقابِ

    والأرحبياتُ من الرحابِ

    Adorned with bags upon bags

    And spacious howdahs

  17. تخطرُ في أَزمّة الذَّهابِ

    أَسرعَ من أَناملِ الحسَّابِ

    Crossing in the agony of parting

    Swifter than the fingers of counting

  18. كأنَّما ترقصُ في سرابِ

    يقذفن بالأيدي حصى الركابِ

    As if dancing in a mirage

    Pelting hands with pebbles of riders

  19. كأنَّما يلعبنَ بالطبطابِ

    من تحت أقمارٍ عَلى قبابِ

    As if playing with drums

    Under moons upon domes

  20. تُقِلُّها أَهلَّةُ الأَصلابِ

    مذ سافرتْ بأنْفُسِ الأحبابِ

    Diminished by the waning of the brave

    Since they traveled with the souls of loved ones

  21. بِتُّ وإبهامي على ذِنابي

    أندبُ قلباً دائِمَ الأندابِ

    With my forefinger upon my molar

    I lament a heart ever lamenting

  22. حَتَّى تبدَّى الصبحُ من حِجابِ

    يضحكُ والظلماءُ في انتِحابِ

    Until dawn emerged from its veil

    Laughing while darkness crept in
