1. لَطَمَتْ بِعُنَّابِ البَنانِ شَقائِقَ الْ

    وَجناتِ لي في مَأْتَمِ الصَّدِّ

    She slapped the violets in the garden with lilac branches

    And I was pained at the gathering of parting

  2. فَكَأَنَّهُ لَمَّا تَكاثَفَ لَطْمُها

    في خَدِّها مِسْكٌ عَلَى وَرْدِ

    As if when her slaps grew intense

    There was musk on her cheek atop a rose

  3. واسْتَضْحَكَتْ فَبَكَيْتُ قالَتْ لا تَخَفْ

    بي فَوقَ ما بِكَ يا أَخَا الوَجْدِ

    She laughed and I wept. She said "Don't be scared

    Of me, beyond what ails you, O brother of passion

  4. لَوْ صُيِّرَتْ شَمْعاً عَلَيْكَ أَنامِلي

    مَا آلَمَتْني فيكَ بِالْوَقْدِ

    If my fingers were turned to candles

    They would not hurt you with burning
