راحٌ إِذا اسْتَنْطَقَتْها بِالمِزاجِ يَدٌ

تَكادُ تَخْرَسُ عَنْها أَلْسُنُ الحَدَقِ

A calm that, when a hand makes it speak with feeling,

The tongues of the eyes can hardly utter it,

كأَنَّها خَجِلٌ في كأْسِ شارِبِها

فَاجَاهُ عِنْدَ مِزاج صُفْرَةُ الفَرَقِ

As if it were shyness in the cup of its drinker,

So he met it when the parting was yellow.

أَوْ مِثْلُ وَجْنَةِ مَعْشُوقٍ إِذا نَثَرَتْ

يَدُ الدَّلالِ عَلَيْها لُؤْلُؤ العَرَقِ

Or like the cheek of a beloved when she scatters

On it the dealer's hand, pearls of sweat.

كأَنَّ ما ابْيَضَّ مِنْها في مُوَرَّدِهِ

كَواكِبٌ نُثِرَتْ في حُمْرَةِ الشَّفَقِ

As if what whitened on it in its freshness

Were stars strewn on the redness of the horizon.
