تَمَلَّكْتَ يا مُهجَتي مُهْجَتي
وأَسْهَرْتَ يا ناظِري ناظِري
You took possession of my passions, my passions
And you kept awake my watcher, my watcher
وَفيكَ تَعَلَّمْتُ نَظْمَ الكَلامِ
فَلَقَّبَني النَّاسُ بِالشَّاعِرِ
And through you I learned the rhythm of speech
So people called me "the poet"
وما كانَ ذا أَمَلي يا ظَلومُ
ولا خَطَرَ الهَجْرُ في خاطِري
Yet it was never my hope, oh cruel one
Nor did separation occur to my thoughts
فَجُدْ بالوِصالِ فَدَتْكَ النُّفوسُ
فَلَسْتُ عَلى الهَجْرِ بالْقادِرِ
So be generous with reunion, souls ransomed you
For I cannot endure separation
