1. بَاحَ بِما قَدْ كَتَما

    لَمَّا جَرى الدَّمْعُ دَمَا

    He confessed what he had concealed

    When tears flowed like blood

  2. رَمَاهُ رِيمٌ فَأَصَا

    بَ القَلْبَ مِنْهُ إِذْ رَمَى

    He was shot by an archer and wounded

    In the heart when the arrow struck

  3. وَاحْتَجَّ في قَتْلَتِهِ

    بِأَنَّهُ مَا عَلِمَا

    And he pleaded for his murder

    That he did not know

  4. يا مَعْشَرَ النَّاسِ أَمَا

    يُنْصِفُني مَنْ ظَلَمَا

    O people, is there no one

    Who will do me justice against my oppressor?

  5. عَلَّمَ سُقْمُ طَرْفِهِ

    جِسْمِيَ مِنْهُ سَقَمَا

    The sickness of his glance

    Infected my body with illness

  6. فَسُقْمُ جِسْمِي في الهَوى

    مِنْ طَرْفِهِ تَعَلَّمَا

    So the sickness of my body in love

    Was taught by his glance

  7. لَوْ قِيلَ لِي ما تَشْتَهِي

    مُخَيَّراً مُحَكَّما

    If I were told, "What do you desire

    Given full choice and authority?"

  8. لَقُلْتُ أَنْ أَلْثِمَهُ

    نَحْراً وَخَدّاً وَفَمَا

    I would say, "To kiss him

    On the throat, cheek, and mouth."

  9. قَالوا لَهُ بِأَنَّهُ

    فِي هَجْرِهِ قَدْ أَثِمَا

    They said to him, "You have sinned

    In your estrangement and remoteness."

  10. حَلَّلَ في هِجْرانِهِ

    لِي في الهَوى ما حُرِّمَا

    He made lawful in his estrangement

    What is forbidden in love

  11. كَمْ عَاشِقٍ قَابَلَهُ

    يَبْكِي عَلَيْهِ نَدَمَا

    How many lovers has he encountered

    Who weep in regret over him?
