بَكى وناحَ غراماً في الهوى ناحا
وَباح بالحبّ عن أحبابهِ باحا
He wept and wailed intensely in passion's throes,
Bewailing his loved ones in torrential woes,
وَصارَ لِلأورقِ الصدّاحِ مُصطحباً
لَمّا رأى للورق الصدّاح صدّاحا
And bonded with the warbler in friendship true,
When he saw the singer sing notes anew.
لا لومَ في نوحهِ إن ناحَ من ولهٍ
وَلَو أقامَ من الأنواحِ أنواحا
No blame in his grieving if he cries in pain,
As if to echo dirges again and again.
وَليس إن خالف النصّاح من عجبٍ
فالصبّ ليسَ يرى النصّاح نصّاحا
No surprise if sober advice the madman shirks,
For rage sees no reason, no calls or works.
كَم بالعذيب غدت روحٌ معذّبةٌ
وَكَم غدا مدمعٌ بالسفحِ سفّاحا
With torment, how souls are tortured so!
And tears flow in streams in constant woe!
وفي الضغاينِ غادٍ بالفؤادِ غدا
وَرايح بعده بالروحِ قَد راحا
The heartache wanders, making the heart ill,
Then the spirit follows, wanders on still.
منّا ومنهم غداةَ البينِ إذ بكرت
كَم عذّب البينُ أَرواحاً وأرواحا
On the morn we parted, what pain did abound,
As parting tortured spirit on spirit around!
كأنّ أَحداجهم في سيرها سفنٌ
في اليمّ أَتبعها الملّاح ملّاحا
As if their caravans sailed ships on the tide,
And the sailing captain stayed close by their side.
مُذ حجبت دوننا الأشباح نحن نرى ال
أَشباح في مهجِ الأشباحِ أشباحا
Since shadows hid them from our yearning sight,
We still see shadows in the shade of night.
وَفعمة الساقِ تُبدي مِن مَحاسِنها
من قبل من أَوبة الإصباح إِصباحا
The glimpses of leg reveal such beauty untold,
Radiant, like the rising sun in dawn’s gold.
تُريكَ إِن سَفَرَت عن وجهها قمراً
تُضيء كالقمرِ الوضّاحِ وضّاحا
And if she unveils her face, like the moon shining bright,
Luminous in the dark with abundant light.
طالبتها صلة الإِنجاح من إِربي
فَنلت مِن طلبِ الإنجاح إنجاحا
I sought her success, so from my Lord I may earn
His gifts of success for which I yearn.
في ليلةٍ لا رقيب أَتّقيهِ ولا
كلباً برفضِ أَهلِ الدارِ نبّاحا
In a night no guard did I fear nor hound,
As I plucked fruits of joy all around.
فبتّ أَقطف مِن أَثمارِ بهجتها
كالوردِ ورداً وَكالتفّاحِ تفّاحا
I gathered the roses and the apples red, too,
Quenching my thirst from the wine, like dew.
وَأَحتسي في تقاضي الوصل مزبدها
وَمن مجاجةِ فيها الراح والراحا
Till the morn did shine its glorious face,
As night slipped away and the cock cried its chase.
حتّى إذا ما بَدا وجهُ الصباحِ لنا
وَاِنشقّ ثوب الدجى والديك قَد صاحا
I kissed her smile as we bade adieu,
Her mouth exuded perfumes, an odor so new!
قَبّلت مبسمها عندَ الوداعِ ففا
حَ الثغر نشراً كنشرِ المسكِ إذ فاحا
Still my tears and her tears in memories roll,
One speaks of joy, the other tells of dole.
وَلَم يَزل مَدمعي وجداً وَمدمعها
بِالدمعِ والدمع نصّاحا وفضّاحا
Once happy, then comfortless, times do alternate so,
Fortune exchanges joy with pain and woe!
وَصرت من فرحٍ من بعد في ترحٍ
وَالدهرُ يعقبُ بالأفراحِ أَتراحا
Count no profit wealth, no matter the sum,
But thank God, though little, some benefits come!
لا تحسب الربح مالاً إن تجمّعه
فَالحمدُ إذ جرّ ما حاولت أرباحا
Let no hopes in this cadent world ever delude,
For hopes have oft themselves transmuted to feud.
وَلا يغرّك في نهج الرّدى طمع
فربّما طمع قد كان ذبّاحا
To God alonecommits thy matters all,
And wander not too far or lest you fall!
وَاِصرف إِلى اللّه كلّ الأمرِ مُعتصماً
وَلا تَبِت في بحارِ الهمّ سبّاحا
If faced by hardship or trial ever so,
As Time brings you trouble or bitter blow,
وَإن تضايقتَ مِن عُسرٍ ومتربةٍ
وَإِن أَصابك صرفُ الدهرِ وَاِجتاجا
Seek the Farmer, the Giver of all great things,
And from him, the path of success he brings!
فَاِقصد فلاحاً أبا المكرمات لكي
تنال ومنهج الإفلاح إفلاحا
The heir of glory's throne, his bounty excels,
None can imagine the wealth he withholds!
خَليفةُ المجدِ جحجاح تأرّث ما
يحوي منَ المجدِ جحجاح فجحجاحا
He makes the Euphrates and the Nile one river,
Pouring gems and pearls like a generous Giver!
بَحرٌ يصير به بحر الفراتِ وبح
رُ النيلِ إِلفان ضحضاحاً وضحضاحا
To askers he offers gifts manifold,
So he stays for us the Giver forevermore!
يَمتاحُ بالجودِ للممتاحِ كلّ لنا
فَلن يَزال منَ الممتاحِ مُمتاحا
He seizes from Time to generously give,
So he takes and he gives for as long as we live!
السالب المانح الأعمار في رهج ال
هيجا فَلا زالَ سلّابا ومنّاحا
The renowned conqueror, with how many a neck
Severed in battle by his side or deck!
وَالصافح الناجح المشهور كم بطل
في الحربِ أَعنقه صفحاً وإسجاحا
His sword stays sharp and slick with enemy gore,
Like the flashing blade in war stamped with war!
يظلّ عارضه الدلّاح منبعقاً
بِالتبرِ كالعارضِ الدلّاح دلّاحا
How the steeds envy the steed he mounts,
When he rides amidst knights and warriors counts!
كم يحسد الخيلُ خيلاً حين يركبها
بينَ الفوارسِ والصفّاح صفّاحا
O King so brave and strong beyond any man,
Whose days begin and end with praise, the Best of his clan!
يا أيّها الملكُ القرم الهمام ومن
يضحي ويمسي لِكسبِ الحمدِ مرتاحا
When you conquered Oman and crushed its exploiter,
You found in victory peace, O glorious fighter!
لمّا فتحتَ عماناً ذلّ شامسها
وَكنتَ فيها بفتحِ العذلِ مُرتاحا
May God give you an everlasting kingdom to savor,
Matching the brilliance of the star Capella in fervor!
أمدّك اللّه ملكاً لا نفاد له
وَقرن عزّ لهام النجم نطّاحا
You and I are both striving for one goal,
You honor me, I praise you, friend of old!
إنّي وإيّاك ضرباً في مذاهبنا
بِالسعيِ والسعي كدّاحا وكدّاحا
So you still honor me with kindness noted,
While I remain praising you with anthems quoted!
فَأنتَ لا زلت بالمعروفِ تُكرمُني
وَها أَنا لم أزل بالمدح مدّاحا
